Best I can tell the major difference here is in the Cache and the Wallet. I want to do mostly VM stuff so I was thinking the Cache might make a difference and had sort of gone for the 66 but I'm seeing signs that the 64 might overclock nicely and could give me much the same performance for £60 less......

So anyone got any strong feelings about which is the right route..... I'm gonna pair this with a DS3P and 2GB of Geil ultra.
 
My e6600 is overclocked to 3.2 on Aerocool HyperTX coolerair. This seems pretty normal for the e6600. I haven't tried to overclock higher. I don't know much about the e6400. I'm very happy with the performance of my e6600. It takes about half the time to unrar my rar files over my x2 4600.

My E6400 has seen 3500, 3600 and even 3700 MHz while running MemTest86+ but the practical 24/7 setting I've settled on is 425 x 8 = 3400 MHz.

Not a lot of a difference in performance between this and an E6600 at the same MHz in most applications. I can't even justify spending a third of the cost of a processor on an exotic air cooler to only reliably gain maybe an extra 100 MHz for 24/7 use.

If an extra 3% of performance is worth the extra money then buy an E6600, if not buy something cheaper and you won't be disappointed. If you have time, wait a month for the new E6420 which has 4MB of cache like its older brother the E6600.
 
There have been a few threads on this subject so a search would probably serve you pretty well, but it basically comes down to what you plan to do with the chip. I can't remember specifics, but you'll see anywhere from a 0-10% gain depending on what you're running with the extra cache. Anandtech did a good bit on the difference between 2mb and 4mb L2 cache with an e6600 and an e6300 running at the same clock speed.

You're not going to go wrong with either cpu, but personally I don't see much reason to go with the e6600. The extra cache just doesn't make that much of a difference in the long run and I can't justify spending an extra $100 for an average 3.5% increase.
 
Thanks for this you have both confirmed something that I have been suspecting for a bit. The rate I'm deciding on my next lot of kit I'm likely to be a month and the new version will be available ( only knowing my luck it will not OC!) I think I might just go for the 6400, hell it can't be slower than my current kit and it'll be obsolete in a year anyway so less on this now means I may be able to afford a new one then!
 
well lets benchmark ..with my OC speed posted below i ran 3Dmark05 free version so the (feature test, and the batch size test) did not run..but besides that this is what i scored ....ran this benchmark with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 without the Catalyst drivers install

3DMark Score............. 6865 (without "feature test, and the batch size test") Free version would not run those test,score would of been higher
CPU Score................. 11041 (without "feature test, and the batch size test") Free version would not run those test,score would of been higher

CPU Test 1..................7.5 fps
CPU Test 2................. 7.2 fps

how about you E6600 guys on stock and OC speed?

E4300...

Higher multiplier is easier to OC as you don't need as much FSB for any given number of MHz, E6600 has a multiplier of 9 and the E6400 got an 8...

if i go with the E6600 i get Supreme Commander free which will go to a friend sence i already have it. & and the extra cache.

if i go with the E6400 ill have enough money left to get a new case

my currant case is an old aluminum mid tower with 80mm fans ect which is why i sorta wanted a new one. with 120mm fans

i dont really want the E4300

performance is the most important thing, noise second so the case isnt a huge issue to me.

but from what youve said the E6600 has the best multiplier of the 2. i havnt had an intel chip sencea 233mhz system so im new to overclocking intels. i have overclocked my fair share of AMD cpu's but they are diffrent in a few ways to intel.


*edit* or i could get the E6400 and the 640mb version of the 8800 but no case.
 
With your setup, 8x or 9x multi really wont make that much of a difference..... DS3 should be good to 500fsb and at 8x multi, thats 4000mhz.......

As for E6600 or E6400, I doubt youll see or feel the difference of the extra 2mb cache, If youre on a budget then the 6400 is the obvious choice.... Only place youll see the difference is on benchmarks....
 
think im going to go with the E6400, and i decided to go with the X-fi that doesnt have the 5.25 drive bay part which gave me enough left to get the 640mb 8800 and a better case than im using now.
