e6400 ADVICE

I am trying to help my friend over clock his computer

Hes is running on a e6400 and trying to stabilize at 3.2ghz.

The only problem is if the ram is put above about 450 mhz, the comp freezes as soon as prime 95 starts running.

I can't figure this out, and was hoping you guys could help me. :)

Well what Im confused about is the ram is rated at pc6400 800mhz at 2.2 volts.

Im running it slightly higher, but can't reach the rated speed.
The ram worked fine in a great over clock on his other AMD computer.

I'm almost sure its the ram, because prime ran for about 5 hours no problem when its set at 400-450 mhz, but once I get to like 700mhz, prime freezes as soon as it starts. :confused:
 
Well your voltage is already pretty high so I would look at backing down the fsb. Are you running a 1:1 divider?
 
It's hard to understand what you're trying because of some of the numbers you're reporting.

An E6400 should be able to run at a FSB of 400 MHz with its default multiplier of 8 for a total of 3200 MHz.

It can usually do this at a default voltage of 1.325 volts as set in the bios. Don't leave cpu voltage on AUTO because many boards are way too aggresive at adding extra voltage to the cpu. Use SpeedFan v4.32 to confirm that the cpu voltage you are actually getting at idle is as close as possible to 1.325 volts. If the motherboard you're using has a big problem with voltage drooping down while running Orthos then increase the bios voltage. 1.3000 volts while running Orthos should be enough to run 3200 MHz reliably.

Start up CPUz and have a look at the memory tab. You should use a divider in the bios so that your memory is running at its rated speed of 400 MHz which is what DDR2-800 memory is supposed to run at. DDR2-800 does not run at 800 MHz.

2.2 or 2.25 volts is fine for these modules.

This memory should run at CL 4-4-4-12 but start with timings of CL 5-5-5-15 until you have 100% stability in Orthos.
 
If your memory divider is still at 2.5:1 then that makes sense why you're having difficulty getting beyond 450 MHz. 450 x 2.5 = DDR2-1125 which is well beyond the rated speed of DDR2-800. Good Ballistix sticks can do DDR2-1066 and maybe even DDR2-1100 with CL5 timings and everything just perfect.
 
My CPU bios voltage is at 1.4, which is being picked up at 1.36 by cpu-z

My cpu is running at 1600/4 or (400)x8 so 3200mhz

Im using unlinked mode via bios, so that negates the divider, right?
If so I have it set at 400mhz.
The ram is running at 400mhz, 200mhz DDR2.

If I click on the memory tab in CPU-Z it says 200Mhz DDR2
That help any?
 
Your cpu voltage seems good.

DDR2-800 memory should be showing up at 400 MHz when you click on the memory tab in CPU-z.

If your memory is only running at 200 MHz then you need to go into the bios and change the memory divider to bring it up to the proper speed.
 
It does show up at 200mhz.

I am using the "unlinked" mode in Bios, which allows me to manually set the speed of the Ram. I'm new to this feature, but I believe I am doing it right. (Does unlinked mode negate the divider????)



I want to raise it to 400mhz, 800ddr2, BUT the system becomes very unstable if I raise it higher than 200mhz, 400mhz ddr2
 
DDR2-800 memory is designed to run at 400 MHz. If you can't get this memory to run error free at its rated speed of 400 MHz then there's a problem.

If you're having stability issues then the smartest thing is to set your E6400 back to 2133 MHz and start by finding out what this memory on this motherboard is capable of.

I like using MemTest86+ burnt to a bootable CD to test memory before I start overclocking anything. This takes Windows out of the equation.

Use version 1.70 of this program. There are other programs with similar names and higher version numbers but this is the one you should use. Reboot and try different memory speeds and different timings and learn what your memory is capable of.

You might have a ram problem or an incompatibility problem. Don't ever take anything for granted until you thoroughly test it.
 
I'm at work right now, but I'll test that when I get home.

If I run the CPU at stock speeds, the ram is stable at its rated speed.
Its really wierd and giving me a headache.
Im going to try swapping it out with some wintec pc6400 I have lying around and see if that works.

Does CPU-z report his cpu as one of the new Revision L2 cores or as a B2. Just curious.

Some people are having to work a little harder to overclock the new ones.

You might have to update the bios or try some different settings to get it stable at 3200 MHz. Overclocking a cpu by 50% is never guaranteed.
 
It is one of the new revisions :(

Haven't done a bios update, we got the board yesterday.
Hopefully that, and a few adjustments can make a diffrence.
 
Alright, so I have the L2 revision of the E6400, (boy I can't win with hardware haha).

I finally got it stable at 3ghz, and the ram at 800mhz as rated. I can't go any higher. Guess I should just be happy that I was able to get it to 3ghz.
 
What does CoreTemp v0.95 report when running Orthos and is it running 1.36 volts at idle or at full load?

A little more voltage might help as long as the temps are reasonable. My E6400 has seen 85C and still runs fine so don't be too afraid to do some experimenting.
 
I upped the voltage in bios to 1.43, which is being picked up at 1.38 to 1.4 by CPU- Z under full load.

I'm running orthos right now at 3200mhz, and its been 10 minutes so far, got my fingers crossed.

what cooling solution are you using - I don't think you mentioned it - My E6400 B2 is currently at 3.7GHz w/ 1.52v (lots of vdroop!) its is set a lot higher in bios - I have a Scythe Infinity and it keeps it below 57C at load and it idles high but I am going to see how much I can lower the voltage... I would try 1.45v in bios running 1600 and linked memory in sync mode (1:1) it will run at 800. I would only try pushing the voltages if you have an after market cooler that can keep the chip cool at higher temps so you don't cook it with the stock cooler.
 
I've found the Intel cooler is adequate at normal room temperature up to about 1.400 volts for the cpu as reported by SpeedFan while running Orthos at full load.
I can run 3400 MHz reliably with this voltage.

As voltage increases, the heat skyrockets pretty fast. If you need more volts than this you should definitely be looking at upgrading the OEM heatsink and fan. Here's the one on my wish list:

I believe the voltage diffrence between actual and what was entered in Bios is what threw me a curve ball.

I got it running 10 hours on Orthos at 3200mhz, 1550x8, stable with the ram synced at 800mhz. Temps seem safe enough.

You can pretty much bet the bank that you are running MUCH higher load temps than 57c on any kind of air, unless you have like, extremely cool ambient air, like in the low teens :p
 
Try 400fsb and linked ram. Set timings to 5-5-5-15 for now, with vdimm 2.2v.

Set vcore to 1.4v bios and drop the multiplier to 7x.

This'll only give you 2.8ghz but it'll establish grounds to see if 400fsb is stable on the board itself.

That said, from your later posts, you say you've got an l2 and are running higher volts and testing stability. That's a good path you're heading down so far.

But what's still concerning is that you're running ram unlinked, and seeing 200mhz in cpuz.

At 400fsb, you can run linked and get 800ddr2
 
I'm reading the temps via n-tune (nvidia monitor), and it stays at about 56-57 on load.
It looks consistent with everest, and my bios idle temps.
My case and fan keep thing pretty cool.
I'm only hitting 1.39 <-> 1.4v after drooping, its at about 1.43 in bios.

Im running it right now at 3120mhz stable.
390x8

The ram is linked and synced running at 800mhz (rated speed)
at its rated timings 4-4-4-12.

I'm happy with the results. =p
 
BTW, I tested it 400x7 to test if it was stable, tested it for only four hours but it was stable.

i have my C2D E6400 Stable at 3.2GHz with a Zalman 9700, i have my FSB at 400mhz (1600mhz) and my voltage i amp it up by .15v and my DDR2 PC6400 XMS2 ram is clocked at 800mhz...as long as ur ram is at a stable speed then u can over clocked it more...i even had it at 3.6Ghz FSB at 450mhz, ram at 900mhz and voltage up by .25v more...do that and you'll cpu will be stable but make sure u cooling it well
