e6300 vs Pentium D 950. Which would be superior, and by how much? This is considered overclocking to the most possible on air.

There is no competition here. The e6300 will smoke the Pentium D no matter how much your overclock it on air.

QFT, nothing more to be said.

What really needs to be done is a sticky with actual numbers instead of just people saying CONROE > URMOMZSPACESHIPLAWLZ

We KNOW the Conroe is fast, but HOW much faster and does it warrant the extra cash is the main issues. If Bob can buy a Conroe for $200, good motherboard for $100 thats nice, but when Bob looks across the street and sees Steve on his Pentium D 950 + mobo that he paid $130 for, doesn't that look attractive? (and yes, on Ebay those are the usual prices in Canadian that I am seeing for these 2 articles).

IMO I might go for a 775mobo that supports C2D but get a cheaper chip to throw in it like the PentiumD 950.

Pentium D 950 is about Athlon 64x2 3800+ level.

Core 2 Duo E6300 is about Athlon 64x2 4400+ level.

Core 2 Duo is superior.

I agree on the sticky. Have the E6300 and others with pentium D scores, athlon X2 scores, etc. That way people can see if 2 FPS in a game is worth all the xtra cash.

I got the same answer about my P-D 915 against a E6300 even though i can play all my games on high with an x800 agp, 2gb ddr pc3200, and P-D 912 cpu. (at 1280x1024)
Some games i can play 2x AA and some 4xAA.

An E6300 is not that much more expensive that a Pentium D processor, considering how much more you get. It's not about it being 2FPS higher. It's about having a higher lowest constant FPS in the game. The E6300 will destroy a PD 950 when it comes to this aspect. Not to mention doing it while running cooler.

That's just the gaming aspect. It's just faster, in everything. There should not even be an arguing point.

Well, if you ONLY play games the conroes arn't that great.

But, if you ONLY play games, you should grab an XB360 instead....

Depending on the game you probably would get 10-50fps difference after OC. C2D is still better then P-D at stock speeds if you don't want to OC.

6300 isn't exactly the absolute best guys...

I swear, and I'm not trying to be funny.... there are a few (ok, i'll admit, very few) people, like me, who live in the northeast, and its cold, and we are in apartments with no heat, because of bastard landlords...... BUT, we dont pay for our electricity....

a Pentium D would be a GREAT processor because the amount of heat they kick out is actually abt to heat up a medium sized apartment fairly well. My old prescott used to save me during the winter, but last year I fried it.....

but yea, not trying to be a jerk of anything, but just to show you guys that there is actually a case where the PD is preferred :) tho i'll admit, its a tiny niche :)

Why not just get a space heater? It will cost less and probably give you higher fps :p

One could also argue that it would be better to put more money into a video card than a processor for gaming. Most bottlenecks are on the video card, not the processor...

well, i DO fold, so the computer will be on 24/7 anyway :)

and I just have fond memories of that prescott, that thing was just a savior during the winter months

Yeah, really, they called them Presshots for a reason. They keep people from freezing to death in south boston :p (Or whichever other shithole you live in where the landlords need telephone pole colonoscopies)

That said, for most NORMAL people, the e6300 is a no brainer, it pulls much less power, performs better and once overclocked will BEAT THE LIVING SHIT out of the PD950

What some people want are also price to performance. If they can get a better AGP card for now and wait till the DX10 cards go down/more come out, then use this system as a backup/server/whatever.

I know you can never keep up with the technology but in some cases if it still works good, why get rid of it? Some People just want a bit cheaper upgrade path then jump to a all new system. Some of the C2D motherboards are 100-200, E6300 is 180, DDR2 is about 220 for 2gb, 200 for a decent pci-e. That ASROCK motherboard would be a good choice for people like that.

But then for me when I upgrade I dont sell it, I hand it down to my kids. :)

I think what people are looking for is real stats on the speed between the different CPU's/video cards and not just a "Yeah its fast, it rocks, it blows it away, etc"

Just my 2 cents.

Riight. My ati 1900xtx would make your apartment seem like miami right.

Whats funny is that on Ebay the P D950 is uber cheap, but in stores, online, etc is outprices the C2D 6300 by nearly $80...and its the reverse on Ebay o.0

The reason is that the Pentium D 950 officially still costs 224USD while the COre 2 DUo E6300 is officially 183USD,

I guess people are getting rid of their 65nm Pentium D's for cheap and upgrading to newer Core 2 Duo's.
