e6300 v e6400 overclocking

I've read the reviews and I know that they all say that the e6400 is a better overclocking because of the higher multiplier. But in real world scenarios is it worth buying the e6400 over the e6300. I've got all my parts sitting at my house for my new build and just need to order the proc. I could save 30$ by buying the e6300 and put that into a larger hdd, but will my overclock vary much more then with the e6400.

My Parts so far:

Mobo:GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
RAM: An A-Data 1gb set (512x2)
Cooler: Blue Orb (from an older 939 system)

So will my maximum overclock really vary that much or should I just go with the e6400 and forget about saving the $30 with the e6300?
 
I was in a similar situation a couple months ago when I built my rig. I went with the e6400. The E6400 will most likely hit 3.2ghz easily. The $30 would get you a lot more for the money in the processor than you would get out of a hard drive. Do you really need that extra storage anyway?
 
That higher multiplier is probably really important. No question, you need it.
 
The newer bioses seemed to have fixed up the ds3 a bit. I have an e6400 personally and ran 8x400 right out of the box. I tried 7x450 before and it worked fine as well, so the fsb's do scale decently, so don't worry about not being able to max it out necessarily. The only issue is the question about the strap it's running on. My testing so far as led me to believe that at least with the F7 bios, it's not always still at the 1066 strap at 400fsb. I use mbench to check latency and sometimes it's way better than at 401fsb but sometimes it's the same. I haven't cracked it, but it might have to do with cold boot / warm boot / rebooting while changing some setting. Right now, it appears I'm running on a 1066 strap though which is nice. In the higher fsb's, you're going to need to dig farther to get back to the same point. Honestly, I would have gone with an e6300 probably if I could go back in time. Currently, I don't really want to pass 8x400 because I'll get dropped into the 1333 strap.

I thought 1333 strap starts @ 401 FSB ? :confused:

Right, that's what I thought too. But a few times, I've run latency tests with mbench and got terrible numbers while at 400fsb. And sometimes, when I reboot, it'll cold boot even when it could do warm. I think it might be because it's changing strap for whatever reason.
 
super simplified but:
2.8Ghz probably with 6300
3.2Ghz probably with 6400

with the 6300, you should hit 2.8Ghz easily after that its luck. There are a lot more people who run in to trouble around 3Ghz with 6300. Where with 6400, most people hit 3.2Ghz easily and just stick there.
 
I run a 64@3.6. That only required a 450, rather than 515 for a 63. And of course the ram only needed to hit 900 as opposed to 1030. It's just all around easier w/ a 6400. And it's only $30. :D Good luck!

Thats where im at with my e6400, 3.2ghz at 1.3875v orthos stable.
 
I have a e6300

Depends what you want in an overclock. If you want to be more assured of getting 3.2-3.5 go for the e6400.

I hit a wall on by GA-965p-S3 at 450FSB+ D9 ram issue.

So 3.15 is it, where if I had a e6400 probably could have gone closer to 3.5 as I know my ram can do it.

Bottom line is decide on the overclock you want to reach, as i was only hoping for 3gig as I was on a tight self imposed budget I am perfectly happy, however more is always better :p
