e6300 OC suggestions

Hi, I am OC'ing my e6300 on a P5N32-E SLI (680i board), with a Zalman 9700, and OCZ Gold Ram. I set my ram to remain on 800mhz and not to change.

The highest OC I can remain stable at is 366 x 7 which is 2.56 ghz. This is with my ram at 2.1v and my processor at 1.4v. All other voltages are stock. Anything higher causes instability. I would like to be at 400 x 7. Should my voltages be changed or is my e6300 just a dud? I bought it the minute it hit zipzoomfly. My stepping is 6, Rev B2. My temps are really low, idles around 28 overclocked, full load around 40-42 (running Setiathome for a few hours).

OCing depends on luck..

by luck i mean that there is a variation even among same model hardwares

your hardware of choice seems nice..but i'm guessing you got a bad batch since most e6300 can do 3ghz with stock cooling..

i say if you really want to obtain 3ghz+, you'll need to swap out hardware

for reference here is the rig i built just yesterday and with almost no effort..all stock air cooling and no modifcation

i think i have some head room but i see no reason to go further on air..

did you lock your pci-e at 100mhz and pci at 33mhz?

did you disable speed step, and other stuff?

Since you're not running too hot, why not increase voltage?

Totally depends on luck.

I have my E6300 (stepping 6, B2) running @ 1.4V, Gigabyte DS3, 460x7 w/OCZ Platinum Rev 2 PC6400 (2.1V 5-5-5-15), +0.1V on NB. Load temps are 54C with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. Completely stable, ran Orthos + 3DMark06 for 20+ hours. I actually had temps around 60C until I realized I left the PWM fan control on. With the fan on full (2700rpm, which isn't that loud) I'm at 54C - plenty of room left in this CPU. My bottleneck is my RAM, I know others have had this mobo at 500MHz FSB easily. POSTs at 475x6 but doesn't boot Windows and fails Memtest86+ within minutes. Doesn't POST at 485x6. Could probably get it stable at 470x7 with some more tweaks, but I don't want to bother for an extra 70MHz.

If you haven't already, make sure you have the heatsink well seated and have an appropriate BIOS loaded - one that isn't flaky. Otherwise you may just have a dud.

I am starting to think my C2D is a dud. I took vcore up to 1.6v and took the south bridge and north bridge up my .1v and I still can't get past a 370mhz * 7 overclock. Really it's a great OC but not what I was hoping for. I got the exact same results on my old AB9 Pro board too.

I think I'll just get an E6420 when it comes out.

What's your processor code out of curiousity?

i.e. the L626A943 type thing on the box?

Below testing was done at 5MHz FSB and 0.02500 voltage increments running Orthos for 5min.

Do you have your RAM set at 1:1? (some boards, such as my DS3 call it x2)

If not, your board may be trying to o/c the RAM well beyond its rated spec.
