My computer has decided to malfunction. Leaving my 940 pentium d fried. (whole water cooling malfunction. Algea had formed and left my cpu at 76C.) It's time for an upgrade, and i heard duo cores are the way to go these days.

The setup:
ASUS P5N32 SLI-Deluxe
(No CPU)
600 WATT Power Supply
OCZ DDR2 2GB PC5600
Nvidia 7900GTX 512mb
"Zalman CNPS9500 LED CPU fan" -new

At first, i thought it was the cooling, so i got a fan to replace that water cooling. Now i know it's the CPU. So here's the question. What CPU should i get for this setup? Im hoping not to spend too much money, and want it for a pretty long time. I hear the E6300 is really good for the price and overclocking. my motherboard is somewhat pretty high-end... at least since the start of this year. What's the best possible CPU to get that i could juice the best? I have never OC'd any cpu ever, but plan to with the new CPU and with the setup i already have. How fast can i get some of the CPU's? I always keep my computer running, non-stop, what's the best CPU for heat reasons?

Thanks, im still in the decision stage, but plan to make the purchase by the evening. all inquiries would help!

I personally find an E6700 to be useless. Either get the Extreme, or the E6600 and overclock.

I am building a similar system, and I am going to buy an E6300, and overclock it to 3.0GHz+

That should fit right in with your system, and give you rock solid performance.

True dat - check my sig. Most important is the mobo. Dont buy the GB because of the D9 micron issues and 450 Mhz. Stick with the Asus P5B-E (check Anandtechs review) for the best overclocking!

ive been looking into an E6600. Could i overclock it to 4.0ghz with my mobo? the P5N32 SLI deluxe sells for pretty well still on newegg. what over clocking tool should i use? the mobo comes with the Asus Aibooster, should i stick with that?

Theres a nice sticky on C2D OCing speeds:

It seems like 3.4ghz is about average for E6600s. My personal highest Orthos stable OC is 3.6ghz, with Air Cooling.

I've got one of those average 3.4Ghz OC's on E6600, so I'll back that up. All on air tho, very nice stuffs :D

What does the E6300 get, an average of 3.15? With alot of them being 3.2+? So you would pay 200 bucks more for a couple of megahertz.

Oh yeah, the L2 cache... It depends who you ask on the L2 Cache, some will say there isn't that big of a performance boost, some will tell you it is a huge difference.

The one's who say it isn't that great didn't buy one.

I would recommend the E6300, and wait for the new nForce 680 motherboards to drop in price, and you should be all set.

Get the E6400. I am using a E6300 now, love the damn thing, just wish I had a 8x multi that the 6400 has. My E6300 is a freaking monster OC'er. 3.22GHz @ 1.35Vcore so far.

If he would rather spend the money for, what, an average of 200 MHz?

Just keep in mind, the E6300 and the E6400, depending on your budget.
