Alright, i'm a long time lurker just reading up on the forums and stuff trying to plan out a core2 build. But now i have some questions and it seems that the most knowledgeable people are right here. So here's the goal: 3.0. Seems easy enough, now knowing that i need some advice on parts and such... This is what i have and what i'm considering (bold will denote things i've already bought or am i going to buy no matter what).

CPU: E6300
CPU Fan: Arctic Freezer 7 Pro
Mobo: P965-DS3

GPU: EVGA 7600GT *used* or ATI x850XT w/ Arctic V5 cooler *used* (i can get them both for the same price, what would be better? i will likely upg to a dx10 card, i just need something to tide me over, i know the 7000 series and x1000 series cards will be able to "run" dx10, will the x850 be able to? thx) also taking suggestions in the ~150 CAD price range
RAM: OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 or Mushkin SP PC2-5300 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-667 or Kingston ValueRAM PC2-5400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-667 (all approx same price $270 CAD, which would be better for oc'ing, or would it matter since my goal is only 3.0?) also taking suggestions in the ~250 CAD price range
PSU: Enermax Liberty 500 watt

Drives, etc are all taken care of.

thanks for any help guys.
Other notes: money is an issue, cheaper = better for me to some extent

get the 7600gt and for the ram i suggest the one from Patriot which seems to overclock nice. here

any other suggestions? i'm having trouble finding that available in canada....

I think the 6300 and DS3 mobo are good choices. That's what I have. I'm running at 2.8GHz rock stable. I also havce the Patriot 667 ram that was on newegg. It is running at 800MHz currently.

i'm at 3ghz stable with my 6300 on a DS3, make sure you flash your bios to F6a. go with PC6400 as it will be easier to oc to 3+ ghz and i don't know much about the X850 but i like my 7600GT 256mb just fine.

I just built the rig in my sig over the past 3-4 days and couldn't be happier. Here is what you NEED to achive 3.0+ with EXTREME EASE.

gigabyte DS3 965 motherboard
E6300 (week 27 chip if you get lucky)
2x1GB G.Skill ddr800 HZ series is a MUST!! (im @ DDR900 specs @ 4.4.4.12 2.3v)
Scythe Infinity Cooler 120mm (it is huge)

with this given hardware, your looking @ 3.15+Ghz no problem.....

Also, BUBBLESCIVIC, where is the F6"A" bios at? Im using an F6 BIOS from gigabytes site, but I cant find an "A" bios?

I would like to try out "F6a" as well. Where can I find it? F6 is the newest on Gigabytes site.

i got the bios from RangerXLT8 from xtremesystems.org. my bios works awesome, if you want PM me and i can email it to you.

No need to spend that much on G.Skill DDR800. get Patriot DDR2 5300. I used it to get 3.150GHz at 5-6-6-17 and all default voltages. I can overclock to 3.3GHz with voltage changes but I feel no need to push it for additional 150MHz when I got what I wanted.

Wait until Oct 2 and get Scythe Ninja Plus, it is cheaper and beat the Infinity. (read rating here http://www.silentpcreview.com/article30-page1.html)

Well, I guess it all depends on how much he is willing to spend. I learned my lesson, and that is to not go CHEAP on RAM.....

wow, thanks for all the feedback.

about the scythe, i dont mind spending the money, it's not taht much more, but how much better will it be than the freezer 7 pro, and will it make a difference for a goal of 3.00? also, will it fit in a normal sized case, it looks massive, haha. (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article251-page1.html)

next, about the patriot memory, is this the same as the newegg.com link? http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...=M&Product_Code=141505&Category_Code=DDR2-PDP and if so, do they price match, because i need a vendor that ships to canada... or any suggestions on a place with a similar price or price matching that ships to canada?

If you want the best clocking RAM I'd suggest you choose Team memory. It is by far the most overlooked brand but there is nothing on the market that is better.

I'd suggest you check out http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101692

Personally I just purchased some DDR2-5300 3-4-4-8 from www.tankguys.biz it's currently running 3-3-3-4 at 784MHz, can do 3-3-2-1 for 32M but not 24/7 stable. Also does over 1000MHz at 4-4-4-4.

They also have DDR2-5300 3-3-3-8, DDR2-6400 4-4-4-10 and 3-3-3-8 as well as DDR2-8000 5-5-5-15.

Oh and most importantly TankGuys / Team ship to Canada :D

Anyone else ever used Team memory?

also i'm really only wanting to spend ~250 CAD, or ~230 US.

I bought the Patriot RAM off of newegg (which was about 180 shipped is I remember correctly). I have been very pleased. I normally go with Mushkin, but I didn't want to spend more than 200 on any one part for this build.

Yes -- the set I received was very nice. I have the exact DDR2-5300 3-4-4-8 set from Tankguys mentioned above running at 4-4-4-9 @ 900 Mhz.

Sorry to repeat myself again, but anyone know of a computer place that sells patriot that ships to canada and has a similar/same price or price matches the newegg price?

about the team memory....
how bad is it to go 4x 512 rather than 2x 1g?
2 Gb Kit DDR2 (2 x 1Gb) 3-4-4-8 667 Mhz is discontinued and was $190
this is still in stock...
1 Gb Kit DDR2 (2 x 512Mb) 3-4-4-8 667 Mhz and only $108

the next closest priced 2x1gb kit is
2 Gb Kit DDR2 (2 x 1Gb) 3-3-3-8 533 Mhz for $252 which i don't want to spend because after conversion, it's $275 and then duty when it cross the border which is another $40, so it will cost me over $300....

a lot of people are going 4x512 for the reason, it's fine. My memory was shipped from San Diego to Toronto, ON and i paid no duty or taxes, was shipped by FedEx.

Alright, after going through a bunch of stuff with tankguys.biz i will not be getting Team memory. I was working out prices with the person there who offered me a discount since i was going to get 4 kits of ram, and then when i went to order, the ram was no longer listed. I am quite disappointed, i received a weak apology and "sorry I didn't know we had so few left" he offered no discount on ram in stock and no other consolation...

so that leaves me RAMless once again and back to my debate...

i will be using this with an e6300/6400 and a p965-DS3 mobo. i will be overclocking, what is my best option of these....

Kingston KVR667D2N5K2/2G 2GB Kit 2x1GB DDR2 667Mhz
Kingston KVR533D2N4K2/2G 2GB Kit 2x1GB DDR2 533Mhz
Corsair VS2GBKIT667D2 2GB Kit 2x1GB DDR2 667Mhz
Corsair VS2GBKIT533D2 2GB Kit 2x1GB DDR2 533Mhz

thanks guys.

Really, I thought most people were going 2x1GB?

Yeah most people are going with 2x1Gb. The only people I know with 4 x 512Mb, were people who couldn't afford it and bought 1Gb at a time.

going to 4 dimms will limit the max overclock. It strains the NB/memory controller more than 2 dimms.
