Please don't flame. Would a Conroe E6300 beat a P4 3.0 at non Multi-threaded apps and games? And if so by how much are we talking?

If an OC'd 6300 can beat an FX-60...

...that would be a yes, and I think at least by 50%.

My serious suggestion to you is to do a simple google search and look at 2 or 3 different sites bar graphs. Dont even bother with the review, I think after the first 3 graphs you'll probably start to see the big picture.

Also remember; quality > quanity. So if your wondering how could a 1.83ghz proc be > a 3.0ghz proc, then theres your answer.

As the proud owner of a OC'd Northwood @ 3.9GHz (/sarcasm), I'd be able to safely say that at this point in time, end of 2006, a hamster just wearing a Core 2 Duo case badge could outperform my processor whilst drunkenly stumbling in a wheel in a cage mounting to a drunken bull.

So...yeah. ;)

For Core 2 vs Pentium D (dual core).... Core 2 is 2x faster clock for clock

IE:
e6300 @ 1.86Ghz >= 3.73Ghz+ Pentium D 965 XE

And thats a Pentium D, much less an older Pentium 4

My e6600 @ 3Ghz is much faster than my my old Pentium D @ 4Ghz.

for Super Pi its twice as fast
for most gaming benchmarks its 50% faster even though the clock speed is 33% slower.

Sad but true!

AMD fans understand this concept very well, they have had lower clock rates than Intel for years for the same/similar/better/slightly wore performance depending on the application.

I have a few "Intel only" work colleges I have had to explain the difference in architecture's when I purchased C2D at only 1.8 gig.

Intel did a great job at brainwashing people with "the high clock rate the better" but now they are having to fight there own historical advertising which is kinda ironic.

There aren't fighting squat about higher clock rate, its still true that a C2D 3ghz is faster than a C2D 1.86ghz, they just have to let you know that each clock cycle is more efficient than the p4's/pD's, i mean the prescott isn't a very "efficient" 30 pipe cpu and this comes from a owner of one.

Rogue, you still on that tired as s478 mobo! :)

That is correct, but my point is when Intel's processor were less efficient per clock cycle compared to ie AMD64 opposed to Prescott to use a recent example, Intel were more than happy to promote the "higher clock cycle" is best myth to the general public and this worked well to sell an inferior product.

Now they have been forced to do a 180 and have the same problem AMD have had for 5 years convincing punters performance (performance per clock cycle) is more important than clock cycle.

Awesome rig, my plan was to hold out for quad-core when prices start lowering, don't see a real point yet to get anything still knowing vista isn't out yet and 2nd gen DX-10 cards aren't out yet. So for now money is going into my dodge stealth and dodge daytona :p

I can play NFS carbon @ 1280x1024 high settings with motion blur off just fine so i'm good to go till i see something that will knock my puter to its knee's (UT2k7 maybe?)

lol, well you have to make a turd look good to in order to keep making money for the company. I bit without research but i'm not one to say i'm not "ok" with the performance when coupled with a good video card.

They should have no problem with selling the C2D's cause every place on the net has benchmarks showing that its whooping AMD's are like the old P2/K6-2 Days, it just makes you all warm inside after that :)

No argument there, I love my C2D, I never thout I could like a Intel product again after lagging behind AMD for so long and ignoring the enthusiasts. AMD will be back though, just looking like it may take a while.

My poor P4 Northwood is starting to look like a senior citizen!!

I miss my Northwood, those things still to this day give great performance.

I had a 92 Dodge Daytona IROC R/T it was bad ass. 150mph.....
Used to race mustangs & porsches in it. It wasn't super fast from a dead stop.... but a rolling start with the turbo kicking in, was awesome.
Noone believed I was kicking their ass with a 4 cyclinder. I had to pop the hood a few times to show people that I didn't have nitrix, etc.

MIne looked just like this http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2038370 but red. I wish I hadn't totalled it! It looks like they were fairly rare & it would probably be quite valuable down the road. It was maxed out, leather, 2.2liter turbo, sunroof, etc.

Oh yeah & back to PC's. You've probably got the right idea holding out a little while for cheaper quad core, Vista & DX10. I just like upgrading for the hell of it! :D

My bud Corkey had one just like the one shown as well.

I wish i had the R/T, they do rock, I have a 90 daytona ES 3.0 v6 that i'm modding, right now i'm doing the basics auto to 5spd swap, CAI, UDP, solid motor mounts and more, i'm saving for LSD, lightweight flywheel, paint job and such but i love breaking the tires loose in second and chirping them in third, i would also love to toss some forced induction on it eventually.

Yeah, i wish i had more money to toss at computer parts like you do, but you always seem to get the best return out your parts when selling while they are still on the market instead of obsolete like my P4 3.0 :) Maybe i can buy your quad-core when your finished with it ;)
