E5200 Refuses to Overclock

So here is the story. I recently decided to get Easy Tune 6 to give my cpu a good boost and that didn't work. Then I went and searched online which lead me to these forums and found what I thought was a god send here because it was the exact same setup but just like Varmint I had an E5200 but those settings arn't working for me. I also tried and studied this thread for some more help as well but that didn't work either. I'm still fairly new to this overclocking thing so please bear with me. Thanks to anyone willing to help I just don't know what to do anymore :(

My target goal would be around 3.3 - 3.5 ghz or if possible 3.7

Here are my system specs
EP45-UD3R with the latest bios F9
E5200 @ stock 2.5
G.Skill 8500 1066ghz 6-6-6-18
ATI HD 4870
Corsair 550 watt 80 plus
Vista Home Premium

The MIT/mobo settings are on the optimized defaults settings
 
Are you still trying to use EasyTune or are you going through the BIOS?

I pushed an E5200 to 4.0ghz on a PQ5 Pro, it wasn't stable, Prime95 would fail after a couple hours, but for most people it would have been fine (aka normal usage I doubt you'd see it crash)... but I dropped it down to 3.6ghz @ 1.275 volts

Everything else I left stock, just bumped core voltage and FSB...
 
You should just get familiar with the BIOS and start changing settings manually, knowing what you're actually doing (rather than blindly copying someone else's settings) will get you much farther... And if you fail you'll know exactly what's holding you back, whether it's your particular processor, or the mobo, or whatever (and whether it's due to heat, lack of voltage, etc.).

There's only like 4 voltages you gotta be looking at (CPU/vCore, NB/NBcore/MCH, VTT/FSB, and RAM), and two or three other main settings... The FSB speed obviously, the RAM divider (which sets RAM speed in relation to the FSB), and your multiplier (which you'll probably just leave at it's highest/stock). Then it's a matter of upping voltages one at a time and stress-testing stuff separately (Memtest86+ for the RAM, Prime95 after that, etc.).

There's a sticky guide on these boards that will probably serve you well. If you can be more specific with what hasn't worked, and why, then we could probably provide more specific answers as well... Keep in mind you wanna test something on the low end first though (3.0-3.3) then shoot higher.
 
Thanks for taking the time to read my post you guys. Im try reading the sticky now. Thanks for narrowing down what I needed to think about when overclocking Impulse. Thought you'd have to mess with almost all of the voltages. Im already familiar with my bios minus a couple things here and there. Once I finish reading the sticky and maybe do a little configuring on my own I'll get back to you guys.
 
I recently did a build for HTPC use using a Gigabyte EP45-UD3L, E5200 and this G. Skill memory. I wasn't looking for much of an overclock since I want things to run cool and quiet so it's running at 3.2 GHz. Depending on the specs of the memory, it may take only one or two changes in the BIOS to get it to run very stable at 3.3 GHz.

The first thing to do is to run CPU-Z and check the SPD specs of the memory to see what voltage the memory needs for various speed settings. If the voltage isn't enough there will be memory erros and the computer will crash/lock up. If the DRAM voltage is set to Auto, you can check the actual voltage in the Health Status tab of the BIOS.

To get the CPU to run at 3.3 GHz set the CPU Host Clock Control to Manual and the CPU Host Frequency to 266. With the CPU voltage set to Auto it will raise the voltage enough for the system to be stable. If there are still stability problems, or it won't boot into Windows, set the (G)MCH Frequency Latch to 266 and the System Memory Multiplier to 3.00A (this will run the memory at 800 MHz).

The system should run stable even with Speed Step (EIST) enabled.
 
On my buddies system we had an issue trying to over clock his E5200 with his EP43-DS3L. It wouldn't overclock at all, even with 1.45v in the bios. But then I noticed that even with 1.45v in the bios it was still running 1.2v on CPU-Z so check in the bios and it was also reading 1.2 even though was set to 1.45v. Reflashed the bios and it worked fine.

Though his chip isn't that good, It takes like 1.34v to get to 3.2ghz, but only runs ~ 65*c with the stock intel HSF.
