E4500 overclocked vs stock e8400?

I was just wondering how much difference there is between the two chips if they are both running at 3GHz (for gaming). The e8400 of course has a bigger cache and can be overclocked also, but what Im asking is how well the overclocked e4500 will do vs. the stock e8400.

Trying to price out a cheap upgrade to my system. If I buy a cheap chip I will most likely keep it overclocked all the time. But if I invest in a more expensive chip I would problably not run it overclocked.
 
just a guess here but if the lesser cpu will have higher buss speed at same clock the lesser cpu with higher buss speed wins, but the fact that the e8400 has more cache will pull it back to being very close i think..... call it a tie
 
little tidbit to run at a E4500 at 3g would take like a what bus between 250-300? because the stock is 200 right?

i think e8400 are stock 333

so the e8400 would still have the advantage with the bus speed.
 
Clock for clock the E8400 is probably 5-10% faster than a similar speed E6xxx chip, add in the extra cache and I'd think the E8400 is probably 10% faster clock for clock than the E4500.
 
Well, according to what I've been reading on all these web review sites, most agree that a 3.2 Ghz processor isn't bottlenecking anything when it comes to gaming, it's the GPU. So with that in mind, buying anything faster than that, if all you do is mostly gaming, would be stupid.

Keep in mind that I am stupid when it comes to computers, so I'm not attacking anybody here. So if you're not using any CPU intensive apps, the E8XXX series isn't worth a cent.

Yup, 10% clock for clock sounds about right. It ain't a huge difference by any means.

Keep it apples to apples.

overclocked you might hit 3-3.6Ghz with the e4500 if you're lucky
with the e8400, you'll hit 3.6Ghz (9x400) with probably stock voltage! and it will run very cool.
And most people are hitting 3.9Ghz to 4.5+Ghz with them.

Mine "only" does 3.9Ghz, but I still haven't thoroughly tested the problem. I'm thinking its a FSB wall, as it does 3.9Ghz with only 1.3v, but I can't get it to 4Ghz no matter what the vcore. I'm going to need to play with all the NB voltages & reference thingies.

To original poster:
The best comparison should be the CPU power / $ spent if one compares the E4500 to the E8x00 series. E8x00 is simply faster and better but you'll have to pay a bit more for it. You should also look up temps for E4500 overclocks as you may have to factor in that as well.

3.9 v 4.0? Damn! 4.0 is a magic number milestone but 100MHz won't really be noticable in terms of performance...
 
Apples to Apples doesn't apply here. If I get the e4500 I will overclock the heck out of it because eventually I will replace it, so Im not afraid of burning it up or shortening its lifespan. Then eventually I will get a quad-core or what ever the best CPU in the 200-300 buck range is at the time.

If I get the e8400 I will run it at stock to get more life out of it and also because from what I have read there is no need to overclock it for gaming.... at this time. So basically I'm weighing whether to pay less money now and upgrade later or buy a great CPU now that I can overclock later when it starts getting a little long in the tooth.

If that's the case then you have to weigh the value of having a fast system NOW. If you can wait, get the nehalem. Otherwise, the e8400 will make you a happy camper.
 
Waiting is Way overated. Live life now and enjoy all you can when you can.
We are not talking a whole lot of money anyway.
In the greater scheme of things I think you would sleep better at night having the E8400

I will sleep better knowing you have it anyway..:)

I would sleep better knowing it is overclocked, and running prime95 stable overnight :)
