E4400 to e8400

My specs:

E4400 @ 3.2ghz
Corsair xms2 pc-6400 1gb x 2 @ 800mhz
dfi lan party junior p45 t2rs
corsair 620hx
4870 512mb
win xp sp 3

Is my E4400 @ 3.2ghz limiting my 4870? It seems like i'm not getting the performance i should be getting in some games. For example, FC 2, the introduction where you sit in the jeep drops me in the low 20s and 30s. The dark room where the jackal talks over you with the light on the ground in the background drops me to 18. According to [H] I should be able to max out the settings and run 4x AA and 16x AF at least at 1920 res. But I'm getting worse performance at max settiings with NO AA or AF @ 1680. However, my fallout 3 performance and crysis settings are in line with [H].

So I'm just wondering, what kind of performance increase will I be looking at if i were to buy an e8400 and take it to 4ghz compared to my e4400 @ 3.2ghz?

Also, what is the popular quad now? Is the q6600 still in? or there something that replaced it?

That maybe due to the 512 ram instead of the1GB. I don't think that would hold you back that much. If I was you I would grab a cheap quad core. If you plan on keeping this build longer, no sense in buying another dual core only to buy a quad later on.
 
You're running a fairly high resolution for 2GB of ram, try putting another 2GB in it. However, that may affect your OC.
 
Yes the Q6600 is still an amazing "bang for your buck" chip. That plus a 4GB RAM kit will completely transform your machine.
 
i'm gonna agree with everyone else...when i went from e6300/2gig to e8400/4gig it was night and day. and 64bit vista runs like a dream...you might even get away with using the win7 beta for free until it comes out.

Sorry guys, I got another question. How much faster is the Q9550 clock for clock compared to the Q6600. I can get one for about $235 USD LNIB. Is it worth it?

My 3.0GHz Q6600 says no. Considering all it took for me to get it there was bump the FSB to 334 and lower its voltage.
