E4400 or E6320

Im looking between these two chips, Price is a concern to me but I want to get what is truley better. I will be overclocking and I know this does make a huge difference as I have heard that just going with the E4400 would be the better idea. But what about the 4MB of cache on the E6320?

Any advice is appreciated, Thanks.
 
You have higher mults with the 4400, prolly easier to OC with, but it's all luck of the draw. Many people hit FSB walls now and limit OC anyways. The extra cache is nice but from what I've seen only affects apps with alot of math like re-encoding and superpi, it does nothing for games.

I have to agree with dnottis, OC'ing is all "the luck of the draw" and the E4400 has a higher multi enabling it to be OC'ed more easily (on air, I don't know anything about water) I have a E6420 (4 MB's cache) and I fold 24/7 it gets about 12.07 tpf on a p2609, my E6400 (2 MB's cache) gets about 14.44 tpf (I'm math challenged I could be wrong) on a p2605. I know the difference in WU's make a big difference (along with OC's, RAM, etc), but if I was only going to use the higher cache apps periodically I think I'd go with a E4400 and just OC' the piss out of it. I've heard it was a pretty good chip.

Edit: Now for a kinda' update. As I said up above if you do a lot of cache intensive apps you'll notice the bigger cache in the E6320 (4 MB's) vs the E4400 (2 MB's, I think). I just got p2609 WU's on both my E6420m and E6400, now the E6420 is OC'ed to 3.0 GHz and the E6400 is only OC'ed to 2.5 GHz (ATM) I get about 12 tpf on the E6420 and about 22 tpf on the E6400. (10 mins is a big difference for only 500 GHz less OC, maybe the fsb difference?')
 
Go for more cache...in the long run it works out better for you.
 
personally, I'd go with the 6420.

Save up a little more and get the best of both worlds.
Higher multiplier AND 4Mb cache.

Many of the 6420's hit 3.2++++Ghz!!

Though I think 3.2Ghz is the "perfect" speed.

400x8 your system will be super fast, dd2 800 ram will be perfectly at spec., the system is right before the next speed strap so the FSB & ram are pushed hard & turn in some great #'s. And if for some reason you can't quite get it stable of the NB is running hot, etc. Try 401x8, you'll be on the next FSB strap, you'll lose a little bit of performance, but the system will be a lot more stable, and the NB seems to run a little bit cooler there too.
 
Yeah, I agree I'd go with a E6420 also, I was mistaken when I thought the OP was deciding between a E6320 and a E4400. IMO the E4400 would be the price/performance way to go if the OP wasn't going to use apps requiring 4 MB's cache constantly. I got a good batch E6420, I also paid about $20 USD more for it too because I ordered it before it was officially released, and folding 24/7 at only 3.0 GHz (vcore 1.35v) I'm quite happy. I only OC' my 2x E6600's to 3.2 GHz and my E6400 "Allendale" only clocks about 2.6 GHz ATM I can't wait to get my E6300 (Conroe) in a better board, it's in a Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA ATM ( a great interim board IMO) and be able to raise the vcore some. (no vcore adjustment on the "Rock")

Edit: My E6400 is in a AW9D-MAX mobo with some el cheapo PC5300 (1 gig) ATM and as soon as my order gets here for 2 GB's PC6400 I'll do some "musical" RAM stuff and put the 2 gigs in one of my E6600's and put the 1 gig of PC6400, I take out of the E6600 rig and put it in the AW9D board with the E6400. Maybe I'll be able to OC' the E6400 some more. (I want as low a vcore as I can get folding 24/7)
