Which motherboard would you buy if you wanted to overclock and E4300? Also, which RAM?
 
You wouldn't need a great OCing mobo or RAM; I would think that the chips would reach their max speed at <450 FSB, so...it's a great budget OCer all around.
 
If you want upgrade ability for kentfield you should buy any of the 965p motherboards... Asus P5B, Gigabyte DS3...

Buy DDR2-667 or 800...

If you want to go cheap route you can buy 945board and cheapest ddr2 you can find...
 
Personnally, I know it may be overkill but I may be buying a E4300 with a Intel D975XBX2 and some G.Skill 2x 1Gb DDR2-800 (not sure which one exactly) or Corsair if price is fair.
 
Well, I think pretty much all the 680i motherboards are OUT, unless you're willing to pay for the striker or the p5n32-e sli, the rest are having too many problems. I got the p5n32-e sli and after getting past a little post problem at the start, it runs great with no problems.

So far the reports of SATA trouble have died down after the P23 and P24 BIOS for the eVGA 680i. I had a great experience building a box the other day with an eVGA 680i board. That says alot coming from me as I'm well known to have had one of the worst experiences out there with the eVGA 680i.

Additionally, the Striker Extreme is a ripoff price wise. It's just a fancy P5N32-E SLI.

Also the rumor is that the P5N32-E SLI is being replaced by the P5N32-E SLI Plus. Also, the Striker and the P5N32-E SLI have worse sound issues than the eVGA 680i boards do. ASUS just now got around to correcting the problems with the 0802 BIOS. (I can not confirm this myself as my board was killed during the update proceedure.)

There's a lot of people who are not having issues with their 680i mobos.

I certainly wouldn't cross the 680i series off the list. However, IMO, the Striker is somewhat of a rip-off price wise.
 
Cant say enough about my Biostar Tforce 965PT. Absolutely Love it all around.
 
It would probably be a good idea to get a P965 based motherboard, or a 650i if they overclock well as well, and whatever name brand DC DDR2-800 you can find.

Well yea, stiker's a ripoff of course. I got my p5n32-e sli for onl 250 shipped, so I'm happy =) oc'd to 3gz and 375 fsb right now, completely stable. Gonna push it more later.
 
I would get the ds3 if you want to be cheap and some corsair value select 667 (micron d9 based ones)

everything works properly, board clocks well, etc

avoid asus, they have vdrop problems. in terms of i680, I would get the EVGA one. seems to be the best of the boards based on the reference design, and it is also the cheapest.
 
I'm not sure (not to jack your thread,just curious) what the advantage of the 4300 series over the 6300. On newegg these two CPUs are the same price......enlighten me.....

As for MBs.......I have the P5N32-E SLI, excellent board. I have the Gigabyte GA-956P-DS3, wicked good overclocker. And I just ordered an ASUS P5N-E SLI so I'll have to wait and see what that beings to the table. (I have two children who appreciate fast computers) I use Corsair value Ram @ 667Hz with the Gigabyte and Corsair XMS @800Hz with the ASUS.

I'm really curious as to what the draw is to the 4000 series. Comments appreciated.
 
Yeah, I wish I waited a little more for the 4300. Same multiplier and cache as my 6400, just lower stock clock speed. Oh well, only about $35 lost, coulda been worse.

I would say get the 4300 and use the extra dough to get some better ram. I just finished running memtest with fsb speeds at stock and I can't avoid errors on my corsair 6400c4 ram no matter what I set it to.

Why wait? You've been able to enjoy your current CPU for longer, and it's faster at stock speeds. Remember the E4300 has a measly 800MHz FSB. Granted, you can OC that chip, but there are never any guarantees. Additionally, $35 isn't a big deal. It's not like you would have saved $100.

I run my memory at stock voltage, actually 1.89 according to ASUS Probe.:D

Well, the higher multiplier is because the E4300 uses an 800MHz bus. It takes a higher multiplier to reach a similar speed to those of the rest of the Core 2 family. Theoretically, they should overclock better assuming that the silicon is virtually the same and the capped FSB and multiplier are the only real differences between the E4300 and say an E6400. Also since you could overclock quite high and still keep your FSB under 1066MHz, boards that aren't the best overclockers will likely be a better match for that chip. Additionally, that might be a great chip to go with combined with phase change or excellent water setups because the high multiplier on a high FSB capable board would yield impressive clock speeds.

That's the theory anyway. That bit of conjecture and the low cost are why people are so excited about it.
