E4300 vs E6300

Upgrading to a C2D build, and I was wondering about processor choice. I know the C2D's are renowned for their overclockability, so I took the stance that cheaper=better since I can up the clock speed to at least 2.6 regardless. I chose the Zalman 7700 because it fits in the SFF case I'm getting and looked at the C2D lineup.

Here's where I'm torn. I don't know whether I should save some money and get the E4300, or if the E6300 is worth the extra cash. I did notice that the E4300 was Allendale and not Conroe, and I was wondering if this core was as good/better for overclocking than Conroe.

Basically, will I generally get a much better overclocking range with the e6300, or is it safe to go with the e4300?
 
It's luck of the far as overclocking goes.

You should try to buy a used E6300 if you can find it as they tend overclock much better.
 
If you are buying a new E4300 / E6300 then it doesn't much matter as they will both be Revision L2 as they are now being built on the same Allendale core.

The E4300 will probably be easier to overclock with the higher multiplier but there are no guarantees no matter what you buy.
 
In my personal opinion the e4300 is crippled by a lack of features. I happen to use the virtualization features of my e6300 and I like it. The e4300 is like a celeron in my eyes. Please remember that this is simply my opinion and other's may think differently. But you can't argue about lack of features.

Ive looked everywhere for info on how VT is used but I cant find any.... how do you use it exactly? Are you running 2 computers with one cpu? can you link me to some infos on what is needed to run this... thanks..

You can't run Vmware for example. I happen to use Vmware to run Linux and fold with the SMP client of FAH. This nets me around 2000 points per day. Nothing comes close. I won't buy the E4300 simply because of that.
 
If you want to go for an easier time overclocking and if this is just a gamers box then the 4300 should do you fine. It has the 9x multi versus 8x on the 6300 so you don't have to have a super faster motherboard to get high FSB. All you need is 334Mhz FSB with the 9x multi for 3GHz vs. 375 FSB for the 6300.

Any decent motherboard should be able to pull both of those off, but if you want to go higher than 3GHz then the ram comes into play more and you have to get better stuff if you want to run 1:1. It would just be easier with that 9x multiplier.

Unless of course you're like the poster above me and use Vmware or some such application, then you'd want the 6300.

The only lack of feature is Virtualisation! Thats hardly crippling as probably 90% of people are not going to use it. It has the same cache, the same core and same performance. Not exactly a celeron is it? Be serious.

I personally went e4300 after almost ordering a e6300 as to start with. I have had to get a single stick of DDR2-667 on cost grounds and as such the higher multi allows me to OC to 3.15GHz as the e6300 wouldn't have got me that.

The e4300 is a great CPU if you don't know whether you can hit the high FSBs (such as in my instance with cheap memory)

Both are great choices and I would go with which ever one is best for your needs

You can run VMWare but you won't have the virtualisation feature sets
 
You'll still be able to run VirtualPC or VMWare, but without hardware-assisted virtualization you'll be looking at a 2-3x performance penalty. It really does come in handy.
 
So in other words it will do VMWare the same as a CPU i.e. P4, AMD Athlon etc with out Virtulisation
 
It really boils down to whether you plan to use the virtualization - if you never run VmWare or the like, then you are probably good going with the E4300 - if you do use those programs then it is probably worth the E6300. I got a E4300 because I don't plan to ever use Vmware or the like, and I wanted the higher multi because I didn't like the uncertainty of running really high FSBs (particularly with a 975x). Either way they are great chips.
 
Sorry, I meant the 7x multi (was thinking of the 6400).

In that case you'd need 428FSB with a 6300 to hit 3GHz.

So you're looking at 334FSB or 428FSB. You'd have a much easier time getting to 3GHz with the 4300 if your board or RAM couldn't cut the mustard.

The other side is, you don't have to buy a DS3 to hit 500Mhz or have DDR2 1000 ram, just DDR2 667 and a moderate board would be just fine with the 4300.

So really, you don't have to be as lucky :) and you can save money on more expensive parts if you went with the e4300.
