What do you think? Is it worth the extra $40 or so for the 2MB cache? Or spend even more for the E6420? I'm going to be building something like this: DS3/G.Skill NR 2GB/X1950pro/Freezer 7. Would the NR's even allow me to max my overclock on the E6320?

just curious. why the 1950? If you save the 40$ it could put you to around an 8800gts 320. blah blah blah. If anything wait a week for the official 8600's benchies. blah blah blah.

You've probably read that statement a million times but look into it. ;)

Anyways with the DS3 you can't go wrong with either Conroe or Allendale. Just what fits your budget and needs.

Edit: Wow i just looked and the 1950 pro has dropped alot in prices. My post is probably worthless. Last i looked they were hovering in the 200$ range. Now there at 150$. :s

Yeah. A GTS is pretty much double the price :p. And meh, I don't really play that many games anyway. I could probably fit one in my budget if I really wanted to but I just don't really need it.

I've heard the extra cache only nets anywhere between 2-5% increase in performance depending on who you ask.

I purchased the E6420 just because I probably won't be replacing the CPU for a while so wanted to get the best one I could afford.

go for the 6320 mate, more cache, higher stock FSB it will be around 5 % better than the E4300 and should overclock easily to 2800Mhz without a breeze...

The ATI 1950 pro is the best card for that money, Nvidia has zero cards there in that price range eg the 7900 can't compete with the 1950pro and costs more, and the 8800 GTS 320mb version is almost double the price ( at least here in Europe)

And for the newer cards mentioned the 8600GTS is the only card that delivers some performance although it's a complete joke in some games, Nvidia still hasn't learned....

Do you think G.Skill NR's will let me get it up to at least 3.0-3.2 though? Or should I get better RAM too?

Well if you want 3 ghz with a 7 multiplier CPU you will have to go over 400FSB for the CPU firstly, with ya mobo passing then the 1066 strap ( thus reducing timings on the NB) , I would opt for a 6420 then, so you have an 8 multi x 400 , giving you 3200mhz on 1066 strap which is one fast foeka !!
Ram should be fine mate no worries as it can do 800mhz easily at 5-5-5-15 2T timings and can run then in sync with ya FSB... a perfect world !!

First of all,I want to say I am very happy with my E4300,but,if I did it again (the purchase) I would have waited and grabbed an E6320 or a E6420....

I want the virtualisation abilities,as well as the larger cache. My rams abilites are kinda being wasted with the current Intel chip I am running.I was a little lucky in that I had the pick of the litter,as I had to build 6+ E4300 based systems a while back at work, over a weekend, and got to pre-test/screen all of them. :D

So I picked the one that ran the fastest, with the lowest voltage and temps.I hope to e able to that again later in the summer with the lower priced quads that are coming down the pike.My boss actually picked the second best one,in return for me working late, and letting him go home early that day.It was the first time in the many years I have built pc's for a computer store, that I have had the chance to get to test, and screen a lot of chips and grab what I wanted.

Eithie way you'll be stylin ! all three I have mentioned are great performers and are dirt cheap for what you get.Good luck ! :)

$113 for E4300 and $163 for E6320... So 44% more cost for 5% more performance? I am starting to reconsider the E4300 now.

Do you think G.Skill NR's will let me get it up to at least 3.0-3.2 though? Or should I get better RAM too?

I kinda capped out around 3.2 with the G.Skill memory.... I'm on a E6600 though. The basic 2gb sets kinda suck for OC'ing :(

Now, believe me I'm no extreme OC'er nor do I have a E6320 or a E4300 I do have a E6300 (I've also got a E6600, a E6400 and my newest is a E6420). I got my E6420 from UPS today (4/14/07) and wow  is it one easy chip to OC' and cool runnin' (important for us 24/7 folders) I have it in a P5B Dlx mobo with el cheapo PC6400 RAM and it folds about 12 mins tpf 24/7 at the low OC' of 3.0 GHz (coolly  at about 36c with a ambient temp of about 22c) I may have got a good chip, but I don't think so. if the E6420 is as good a chip as I and others think it is I would think the E6320 would also be a strong chip  Besides who wants a no VT capable chip (whatever that is  )), but more importantly with the coming price drop a I would definitely "hold fire" until the 22 April price cuts and get a E6320, for I think $133  I think the Ex20's are a little steeper in price, but they're full class "Conroe's" (4 MB's cache vs 2 MB's cache).
This post is only my $.02 cents worth and IMO, so don't anyone freak out :p

I'd suggest against that setup. The freezer's pricing isn't too good on newegg anymore. How much are you able to get it for? Also, how much for the x1950pro? It looks like pricing for that hasn't come down as much as 7900gs pricing has. And if you're not willing to step up to the 8800gts (about $260), then the 7900gs is a MUCH better buy. With a simple voltage increase, you'll be seeing high high clocks (even without voltage increase, you'll see great speeds). Also, I'd suggest the e6420 just because of overclocking ability. For the money you save on the 7900gs, you can opt for the HZ's. That said, the NR should be able to overclock to 500, although maybe at looser timings. As for motherboard, the biostar tforce p965 should be a contender for you as well. Or if you can spend a little more, wait for the dfi p965-s board.

And if freezer will cost you in the 30's, get the scythe ninja instead.

split the difference between the two with e4400.

wow that's some horrible advice man. e4400 won't really help him to a higher overclock compared to e4300, and it'd be just all extra cost. e6320 would have extra cache as well as a conroe platform to be overclocking with. that said, you should look into the abit quadgt or the dfi p965-s.

The reason for this is that with the e6320, you'd probably be in the 460-500fsb range, and you'd be better off with a board that can hold onto the 1066 strap up there for more performance.

I can get the Freezer for $25 locally (obviously not going to pay the $60 on Newegg lmao) and I don't really need too high of an overclock so it'll do. I also don't need to buy thermal paste for now since it comes with MX-1. The X1950Pros cost the same as the 7900gs' right now but after seeing people get 6k 3dmark06 scores after overclocking the 7900gs, I think I'll go with that. I don't need to volt mod it or anything to get a good overclock do I? I don't really like the Biostar board: doesn't have solid caps, not the greatest manufacturer, bad power connector placement etc. etc.. The DFI is nice but it'll probably be hard to find in stock for a little while and this being my first time bios overclocking (all I've tried is GPU overclocking with ATITool), I hear that DFI's are usually pretty complex when it comes to that so I don't know if it'll be a good idea. Plus, I don't need the major overclocking capacity of it.

I think I'll just go for the E4300.. I guess I could get quite a bit more performance out of a E64 but meh, I don't think I would go above 3.2 or so on it anyway so the extra overclocking might be wasted. And an E4300 just seems simpler since I don't need as good of a motherboard, RAM etc.. to get a good overclock.

Make sure to wait for the price drop. Should be 40-50 less come late april.

I was talking about price wise, not performance, but I understand your point.

Fair enough. With more moderate overclocks, a lot of boards would suit you well. Might I also recommend the p5b by asus. It's around the same price as the ds3, but may be less of a headache. Although again, for more moderate overclocks, the ds3 should be fine. The p5b doesn't have solid caps, but that really doesn't make much of a difference. And I see your point with the e4300 now, and a lot of websites are starting to offer it cheaper.

As for the 7900gs, you should be able to get around 580mhz on the core (reference is 450. stock with a lot of manufacturers is 500 or so). And about 800 on ram. Reference is 660, a lot of companies do around 690 or so. Most 7900gs use hynix 1.4ns, which is rated 714mhz, although that could vary in actuality, depending on the timings used. With a voltage increase from 1.2v to 1.4v on the gpu, you should be able to see into the mid 600's easily. And with 1.5v, you'd be seeing about 700 or so. If you can find a chaintech 7900gs or similar one, which uses the vf700 cooler, you'd be better off, due to its nice capabilities in cooling. Ram voltmodding really isn't that big a deal, since it doesn't start to get bandwidth limited until you're into the 700's for core, so 800 would be more than enough.

The freezer is a decent deal, and for the price you can get it for, and your goals, that's a pretty good choice too.

All in all, I think you've got some good choices in mind. As for ram, I suppose if you'd be running around 355fsb for 3.2ghz, then you'd be looking at ddr800, or if you use the 4:5 divider, running ram at 888mhz. Either way, you should be able to attain that easily, although you'd probably get more aggressive timings if you got the higher end ram. NR should be able to hit 888 too, and possibly at 4-4-4 too with 2.1v, but worst case, you'd probably see 5-5-5, which isn't too bad.

I wanted to apologize for my last post. I didn't mean to sound so harsh, and hope you aren't offended. I can see what you meant, and I'm sure you see where I'm coming from too. Again, I'm sorry
