Not often that I feel necessary to speak highly of a cpu but these 90 dollar wonders have done me proud in three machines in my household.

All of these babies have done over 3.2. If not for the fact they are on stock cooling, I'd keep them at the higher successful clocks I've attained ...which were :\

3Ghz at stock voltage--I think that's impressive all by itself and 90% of users should get this far easily....even with a shit mobo lol!

Now all my kids and wife are part of the duo core family and they equally are impressed and you'd think what'do they care? I had a 3.0p4 Ocd to 36.-3.8 and it felt like a slow turd heading for the door :)

other attemps:

320x10@1.4
330x10@1.45
340x10@1.5

Suicide attempts:

3.7 and 3.8 @ 1.6-1.65v. Even then my temps were still 55-60. Not good for stock HSF but damn, if I used my water or peltier setups on these, I know I could run 24/7. Heck my 9700 would do some justice I'm sure.

I guess what I'm trying to say is to all on a budget, these chips are excellent overclockers like you didn't know already :) Games run exaclty like my quad with a 8800GT. Sometimes I think about selling my quad but don't want to get bindsided by some new game like SC that uses all cores. The cache on these don't hurt it too much that's for sure!

Love,

A very happy Intel overclocker.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, sir.

Great numbers you've got there!

Samuel.

Yep, these are in no doubt some serious value if you choose to overclock. I got my E2180 running at 3GHz 24/7 with a notch of vcore because it wasn't stable at stock (or I just bumped it to make sure it was stable.. forgot which). At 1.4ish vcore, I can run 3.2GHz but at the time, I had no way of telling what my temps were. I've seen temps of around 26C or so idle with my GeminII, so its nowhere near the breaking point. The E2180 is a very good overclocker for cheap.

E2140 is the one I picked to play around with. Definitely a great overclocker.

E2140($60) + Radeon X1950 = 3DMark06: 6941
Core2Quad Q6700 Kentsfield($540) + Radeon X1950 = 3DMark06: 7352

Of course we don't know how well the owner of the quad overclocked it but still, for $60 you can't feel bad.

Here's a screenshot of CPU-Z, Coretemp, and 3DMark06 results.

I'll be getting a 8800GT soon and will report back with the new 3DMark06 score. If it seems to be a bottleneck I'll probably just pick up a Q6600 or one of the new chips in early 08.

My build: E2140, Gigabyte DS3L, 2GB Corsair 6400, Corsair 520HX, Antec 900, Tuniq Tower 120.

With an XFX 8800GT 512mb, 3DMark06 score is 11,790.

zomfg! such low voltage on the E2140, with such stable final results!

Cool stuff, Epiik.

nice! I'm beginning to think that waiting a little bit--not long--just a while longer could of yeilded me a lil' more savings. I know, if you want the best, you pay for it. But seeing the results of these el cheapo chips perform, or outperform depending on the OC, is quite humbling. I ran 3dmark and scored 13K w/my 8800GTX. Close to the 14.5 on my quad. To me though that's not as impressive as the actual gameplay which to my eyes is nothing. They run just as fast and they don't appear to bottlneck anything.

Now I know if I were to run supreme commander, I'd see the difference. Heh, I own the game and played it three times at the most. That game is what made me think I wanted quad to begin with.

I don't regret my quad purchase because money isn't an issue--thank the Lord. But if it was, and I've been there and probably will be there again, these chips are a great value/performance. Nothing new I know to all of you. I only felt like sharing because if I were to ignorant to see the alternatives, maybe there's someone else just like me needing a push in a practical direction. Bottom line, u got money or need to play a confirmed quad utilized game?--get a quad processor. Otherwise pay for a good mobo and save with one of these lower clocked CPUs.

With a $50 Foxconn board, E2140 for $75 or less, and 2GB of PC6400 DDR2 for anywhere from $20 after rebate to $45 without it, the cost / performance is really up there right now. :D

When my friend finally gets another $1-200 he's getting one in his new rig.

In a similar vain I'm running on an E2200. I think that might have been a mistake though because its voltage range is much more limited for some reason (max at 1.312v)

I'm running at 250x11 2.7 Ghz stable with stock voltage 1.27v. 275x11 3 Ghz wouldn't POST even at 1.3v. Maybe I should try a 10x multiplier with higher FSB?

Anyone know why the E2140 and E2180 are rated up to 1.5v while the E2200 isn't?

Side note:
My 3 year old Opteron 250 (2.4 Ghz, single core) is actually faster at certain single-core things (especially crypto operations where the 250 is nearly twice as fast). Its cache is the same 1MB, I would have thought the E2200 at 2.7 Ghz would be a lot faster (comparing a single core to single core).

the E2180 voltage limit on the box reads 1.35 volts.

1.5 is usually what we overclock it to. theres really no volktage limit. you should check your motherboard and BIOS and see if theres any updates. that would probably fix everything.

Interesting, the Intel web site lists the E2140 and E2180 as rated up to 1.5v. Maybe I'm looking at the wrong specs? SLA8Y and SLA93?

My BIOS is up to date (IP35 Pro).

Edit:
OK, this made me want to run some tests again. I did manage to get it up to 275x11 3 Ghz at 1.3v and setting the memory up to 2v where it's suppose to be (memory is a little underclocked though). This seemed relatively stable but after about 1 minute of Orthos the temp was up at 66C. I guess it's time to replace the stock cooler with something better. At first I wasn't going to bother since it wasn't stable but things look a little better now.

I kind of made an impulse buy yesterday, picked up an e2140 (M0 stepping) and an IP35-Pro, ripped out my Opty 170 and got to work...

I don't have any aftermarket cooling until the 2nd, so I left the stock cooler on, put in my 8800GT and 8GB of Patriot DDR2 (for $10 more than 4GB, why the heck not, right?), installed Vista x64, and I've been running stable at 3.0Ghz, and if CoreTemp is to be trusted, I'm at 40c peak. This is at .25v above stock, I can't wait till I put my Ninja on it, I'm hoping for 3.4Ghz+

I don't know if I would trust that temperature. Just yesterday my machine got "stuck" on 40C also. It never changed. After rebooting the temp starting working again. I'm not sure what caused the problem but I think it might have been an issue with the Rivatuner C2D temp plugin and the other software (uGuru or CoreTemp).

40C is unbelievably low. I idle at about 29C but it hits 40C probably within 1 second of starting Orthos. I peak at about 65C on the stock cooler at 2.7 Ghz (running two Orthos CPU-stress at the same time).

Yeah, I agree, it seems too good to be true. For some reason, uGuru doesn't run on my system (when I boot in, the program crashes), I'm just going to uninstall it today. Fans will be on a rheobus and I don't trust windows OCing anyways, so who cares, right?

So what's the most accurate way to test temps these days?

Which version of uGuru are you using? The latest version from the web site I think is 3.04. However, the CD that came with my IP35-Pro has version 3.05 on it.

3.04 did not work, it would crash every time. The 3.05 version on the CD does work for me though. A bit weird because I never use the software off the CD because usually there is a newer version on the web site.

uGuru is nice because you can tweak the BIOS settings without powering off the machine. I hate that saving the BIOS settings causes a complete cold-start which is bad on the hard-drives.

Interesting thread and nice results. Can someone recommend an inexpensive motherboard and RAM that works well with these high overclocks?

I bought some of that G.skill then needed a board that would run it.

So I picked up Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and E2160 (M0 stepping)

Put it together last Wednesday with my Zalman cooler.

E2160 @ 2.997 at stock voltage (333 x 9)

Idles at 24-25 c Peaks at 49-51 c in Orthos

Waiting to add watercooling to try and higher. Its been running stable and have had no problems with it, was a blast at the LAN I went to on Saturday playing COD4.

Core Duo E2160 @ 3.0 ghz on air (1.8 stock),Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L, 4g. Gskill DDR2-800 5-5-5-13, X1950PRO 621/776 (580/700 stock)

I'm stuck at 320x10. The most logical reason I can think up of is that my ram is only getting 2.1v MAX. The tracers I believe need 2.2v to run properly. Trying to figure out which mobo I want to buy now.

You're not running 1:1 or linked are you? I mean, you may have reached the chips limit...and by golly, that's a nice OC but you may still have room if you're not running synced with the ram.

my board won't let me change voltage, and is under volting it a lot, i can only get to 240 fsb, i'm gonna do a pinmod, i'll hopefully be back with results soon

EDIT: to go from a tinfoil pinmod to a conductive ink pinmod gained me 3mhz over the old 3mhz gain that the old mod got me
now up to 1.31 volts from 1.28 [1.35 is what it says on the box]

I have a request, could you try the new coretemp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ I have the same cpu and am now worried about overclocking any more cause the new temp is showing much higher temperatures than before +15deg. idle is now 44 and load is in 67-69 range and used to be 30-31c idle and load 51-53c.

Not 1:1, but I don't know what you mean by linked. Ram is currenty running at 400.3mhz.

awww, man! with the new coretemp i found out my cores are sitting at 38/42c idle, 45/50 loaded what is a normal temp for these, i'm used to a-64s and adding fans at 40C load, are the intel cpus more heat resistant?
one of my cores is 5 degrees hotter than the other, full load, is that normal?

EDIT: it is running a scythe samurai z with a 40 cfm fan on it

I'm almost certain the new coretemp is reading the e2xxx e4xxx M0 stepping cpus wrong, and that the old core temp was accurate. mine is now idling around 45c and loads to 62c+ orthos, thats with a better than stock HSF and a ambient room temp of 19c. So I'm pretty sure my actual temperature is closer to 30c idle and 45-47c load but I could be wrong, just doesn't seem right to me.

Here is a review the same HSF that I have, with an e6300 @ 2800ghz and 1.4v its temps are idle 34 load 47.

http://www.legitreviews.com/article/598/5/

Maybe these M0 stepping cpus are alot hotter, I have no idea.

youre load temperatures are fine but your idle temps are kinda high.

which is quite an odd situation.

anyone have insight?

Easiest way to take the different Tjunctions out of the equation is to use the "show delta" (can't remember the actual words) setting in Coretemp - that'll show you exactly what the core is reporting, as long as your delta is not approaching zero (or 20C, or whatever your preference is), you are fine.

And 45-47C load sounds too low for a 2180, I'd believe the 62C load temp.
