E2180 now or later?

Should I get a E2180 now or later? Not sure if the prices are supposed to go down or if they aren't in production anymore, also what is the cheapest place around to buy online? Newegg?
 
Price on those low end Intel CPUs like that are not going to go down much more. The E2160, E2180, and E2200 have all been within a few $ of $70 since shortly after they launched. That is pretty much the floor for Intel CPU pricing on a chip like that.
 
So should I wait for the E5200? How long will that be out? I was kinda hoping to stay under $80 though.
 
If your still considering the E2160, I can tell you one thing is for sure, it overclocks like crazy.
 
get the E4300 (it runs happily at 2.4) around $50-$69
or E4400 Suppose to be nice over clocker too runs about $60-$79

The cheapest E2180 was Microcenter for $59.99 Boxed that i have seen.
But they had it on sale Houston and Dallas, which are out
:D My cousin bought them all for his Internet Coffee

Online MicroCenter Warehouse might have some.
 
The E4xxx do not overclock well at all... Also most of them are discontinued and the remaining ones are over OP's budget ($80). Also it would be stupid to buy the E4xxx procs right now as the E7xxx have been out and are the 45nm replacements that are way better for the same price.

To OP: for your price range I still say its between the E2180 and E2200, unless you want to wait for E5200. If I were in your position, I would wait for the E5200 if at all possible.

I can crank my E4300 to E6600-E6700 Stock Speeds on air
Runing the PC 24/7 with any games i want, with no crashes whatsoever.
As long as its the Conroe-2M and w/ any overclocks you need to get lucky on the chips.

The E2180 E2200 are also discontinued, the only ones around are the ones on shelfs.
So either he has to get these used or find a retailer that have em in stock.
Used, they all run you between $50-$80.
I got my 4300 for $50 alot of people sell them for $60-$70 on here.

The E7xxx are price well over $100

My 2160 is way higher then E6600-E6700 and I'm on the stock Intel heatsink. When I got to aftermarket HSF I can easily hit 3.4GHz+.

The E4300 is on pricegrabber for $150 and thats way over the E7200 price. Looking for any E4xxx on pricegrabber I find them all costing over $100. The best you could do is an E4600 on Newegg for $119 and its the same price as the E7200.

And that is pure BS, the E2180 and E2200 are NOT discontinued, in fact they are 2 of the 3 only E2xxx procs still produced. Here is a link to Intel's cpu roadmap and you can see that they have the E2180 and E2200 to Q3 and past that most likely the E2200 and E2220 will be in the V2 line as the E5200 takes the V3.

Also I was never recommending the E7xxx to the OP, I was using it to say that getting a E4xxx is useless because the E7xxx is same price and WAY better performance.

They might have shrunken new ones. But the OCable one as we know are not.

And i am not saying my chip ur chip better crap.
I am giving him different options.

I just simply put my numebrs out there as an example, knowing i can go beyond but i don't want to.
Not everyone buys brand new CPUs since some prices are redicilously high.

You're statement doesn't hold water, what proof do you have that the E2180 are discontinued, I have already shown a valid reason as to why they are not discontinued. Also there is no such thing as a shrunk E2xxx, they are all 65nm process and are all the same overclockability. I wasn't trying to say who overclocks more or not either, I was stating that it is pretty well known that the E2xxx are better overclockers then E4xxx. Used is also not a very smart option when buying cpus IMO, there is no way to tell how hard the cpu has been pushed in overclocking and it could be on its last leg when you buy it.

In the market segment that the OP is looking at, the prices are not ridiculously high. In fact most people were surprised how much of a bargain/performance these cpus were when they came out. So I see no reason to shop used for an E2xxx. Especially if the OP is expecting to use this proc for a while.

EDIT:
Referring to this page of that same article that has Intel's EOL schedule all the way until Q1 2009, you can see that the only E2xxx procs scheduled for EOL are the 2140/2160. Nowhere does it mention the EOL for the 2180/2200/2220 so by logical reasoning we would find that they will not be discontinued until sometime after Q1 2009. This does apply to manufacturing as it is Intel's internal roadmap for cpu's. Also notice that the E4xxx & E6xxx are the ones getting the boot by Q1 2009.

What are you talking about? What is this "OCable" one? You can overclock any of them.

OP, if you want the 2180, it is available for $60 at Microcenter all the time. Usually it is for instore pickup only, but sometimes they offer it w shipping also (shipping extra). I think the E5200 might be announced on the 10th.
 
Good, I have a Microcenter around me so it shouldn't be that hard of a problem if I want to get one. Anyone know what time the E5200 is going to come out?
 
I would check also on the FS/FT section of the forums to see if anything there is of your liking.

According to most sources, it should be within a month or less. Somewhere I read the specific date 8/10 but I'm not sure how valid that is. I have a feeling it shouldn't be more then a month though.
