Heya. I am a long time system builder, but I am an overclocking noob. I tried getting a feel for what I would need via other posts, but decided the best way was to just ask.

I am picking up a E2180 to overclock until I pick up a quad core down the line. I have heard that heatsink choice needs to be based on processor, motherboard and case (so it fits and doesn't hit any resistors, etc on the motherboard).

With that said, what is a good, not-terribly-expensive heatsink that I could throw into the following machine to get some good overclocks?

E2180 processor
Cooler Master 690 case
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L mobo

Thanks for any/all help!

thermalright ultra-90 comes to mind for that. Should be very efficient for the E2180. Im still running the stock cooler on one at a nice 2.8ghz speed and temps never break a sweat(no voltage increase)

ZeroTherm Nirvana NV120 - $46 shipped, $36 AR at Newegg.com right now. Great HSF -- it'll even handle the Quad just fine when you put it in, and it does not have any clearance issues with your motherboard or case.

If you're looking for something less expensive try and find a used Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro or Coolermaster Hyper TX-2 -- don't pay more than ~$15-20 shipped, though. They're not near the same caliber of HSF as the ZeroTherm or the Thermalright Ultima 90, but they'd be plenty for an E2180. You'd have to replace them if you switched to a quad and wanted any kind of substantial OC.

ewiz.com has the artic cooling freezer 7 pro on sale for $22 shipped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

The stock heatsink for the e2180 is tiny. So almost anything will do. With that said, those processors can get really hot when you start cranking the voltage.

He means Thermalright Ultima-90. The Ultra 90 is an inferior model. Its not exactly cheap though and youll have to get a fan separately. Something a little cheaper but still performs well is the Tuniq Tower. If you want REALLY cheap the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro comes to mind but I dunno how much of an improvement that is over stock. Of course the king of the hill is the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme if money is no object.

your right 9mm :p all these damn naming schemes and i still get em screwed up lol. the arctic sounds like a good fit, i had one for an amd dual core, but was thoroughly disgusted with performance of it. Perhaps it'll perform well enough for the e2180

I use an Ultima-90 on my E2180 at the moment. I haven't really checked the temps in a long time but I was getting roughly 60C at about 3.4GHz with a lot of vcore with it if I remember correctly. I was using a Coolermaster GeminII that I got for $7 which now lives in my father's AMD 6400+ system. It does its job well and can be found for cheap.

i used the stock cooler, but wasn't happy with the numbers at 3 ghz. i swapped the stock cooler for a Coolermaster Hyper TX-2, and it settled right down to 32c. heck with the tx2, my
8400 is happy as a clam too, i have NO idea what the real temp is, every program gives me something different, but needless to say it's plenty cool.

i don't know if there are deals out there, but i got my tx2 for 2$. really can't complain. i'm sure if you dig around you can find a comparable. it has done just fine by me.

This is on a copper core retail heatsink. I have the same idea as you but figured going ultra-cheapo until prices drop. I might get a freezer 7, I had one on an overclocked 805D with simillar results as a previous poster.

the ultima 90 is very good
the kingwin 12025 and xigmatech HDT-1283 are the same heatsink but one comes with fan attached in box.
i have the kingwin and it gives me around 15 C cooler than the stock intel cooler.
the arctic freezer 7 is also good.

Well I saw a rosewill HSF the other day with very nice reviews. The thing is like 13 bucks, as soon as i get all my freaking parts i'll check it out and see how it comprares to the 2180's stock HSF.
