I wouldn't think that 1MB of L2 is worth $33. So I'd choose the 2160 for price/performance, just to answer your question. If you don't need the system immediately I'd go for the E2180 over at Tiger, it goes on sale for $49 frequently if you don't mind the MIR. It's $59 right now, I just checked.

Ya I saw it on sell fro 59.99 but it is OEM without Heatsink. so I would have to spend 20+ on a decent Heatsink.

I am not in a hurry so I will be checking around for good deals. I will probably be getting it within the month so If I see a great deal before then I will pick it up.

Based on the choice of your video card, I would assume you would be using the system for gaming?

The extra cache on the E4300 could be worth it in such a case, clock for clock it's about 10% quicker in games compared to the E2160.

In the context of total system cost, a $33 difference isn't a lot when you're spending hundreds of dollars anyway. I would opt for the E4300 chip if gaming is a priority.

That is what I was thinking just thought I would ask people that have more experience with the new chips. I am currently using a 3.0 P4 with 2 gig of ram.

You will see a big leap in performance from either chip, especially if you overclock. However, the E4300 provides the bigger leap, which I think is worth it for better gaming performance.

Are you intending to overclock the CPU? If not, the E2200 for $85 is probably a better deal than the E4300, it is clocked at 2.2GHz as opposed to 1.8GHz on the E4300, which is enough to compensate for the smaller cache in gaming performance.

However, if you intend to overclock, then stick with the E4300, a 3GHz E4300 chip is still 10% faster than a 3GHz E21x0 chip. ;)
 
I was going to Overclock but just a little at frist 2.6 until I have time to mess with and learn bios/what not to make sure I dont fry anything. I know there are guide I just dont want to kill my stuff.

I was going to try and wait until Nehalem to upgrade but I am getting tired on my 5 year old systems glitches. So I was thinking of getting a cheap system that will last me until the new intel socket drops a little in price.

Intel Chip (Dual Core under $100)
probably 4 Gigs of ram ($69 or less Adata right now)
and the 9600 since it will be a lot better than my 256mb x850 agp that i am using now.

I was wanting to keep it under the 400 dollar mark so I am not spending a ton before my BIG upgrade in about a year. My current system lasted 5 years with only upgrading video card and ram so that shows how long I keep my computers (and buying high quality products when I do big upgrades)

Overclocking Intel CPUs is pretty easy, I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time. ;)

There is never a 'perfect' time to upgrade since there is always something better around the corner, but I'd agree that your current system is due for an upgrade since it'll struggle in most of the latest games.

I actually like your line of thinking, getting a reasonably cheap (but still decent) system now for gaming to tide you over until Nehalem. You can also upgrade the CPU to a faster C2D or C2Q down the line as well, it just won't run Nehalem, so you've got a few choices either way.
 
Yup My thinking exactly, If Nehalem isnt all want it is cracked up to be or the prices are just rediculous for the performance increase I can but the latest 775 Quadcore and have a system that will last a good while. olny other thing I will get will be a case Probably the CM 690 when they go on sale again. Used it in my friends build and I loved that case.
 
It's just $33, get the E4300. The extra cache and the overclock will be enormous. Besides, oc for e2x00 with all that heat is just a lot of trouble. The cache will serve you very, very well.

Don't nehalem specs require both a new motherboard and DDR3 memory? That will cost a crapload more for what..10-20% more performance, or maybe less, or less power usage totalling no more than 20-30W? Just wondering. I was excited about nehalem until i learnt about the architectural upgrade requirements. As such i settled for a mid-ranged C2D i have today.
