Hey I just purchased that bundle (e2140 + some crappy ecs mobo) from frys for $70 and the $60 OCZ Platinum rev 2 2 x 1gb ram. I am trying to build a budget overclocking build. I was thinking about either getting a Gigabyte p35-DS3L or a p35-DS3R. I would prefer the DS3L because its cheaper. But will I be able to get a decent overclock (maybe ~3.0ghz) with the DS3L? Or will I have to spring for the DS3R? Or are there better overclocking boards for the same price? (BTW i have the e2140 q711a618) <-- don't know if thats the stepping or not...i'm a noob with intel processors

P5K SE/P35-DS3L will both overclock, but you may want to point a fan at the northbridge heatsink.

If you're not trying to max out your FSB, you should easily be able to do 400x8.

yea 300 x 8 should be good enough for me. so is the ram that i got ok? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227139 and I was thinking about getting a x1950pro with it. so how will this do at gaming? I play America's Army, Rainbow Six Vegas, Grand Theft Auto San Anreas, and maybe some newer games if I buy them. Will I be able to play these maxed out with a 256mb x1950pro or should I spring for the 512mb?

EDIT: o btw will a geminII fit on a ds3l?

X1950 Pro can play Oblivion maxed at 60FPS, 1024x768. If you're going for higher resolutions, you might want the 512MB versions, especially with large texture packs and whatnot. 4xAA/AF

CS:S Maxed, de_wanda (check it out), even with bots 40-60FPS 2xAA/4xAF
BF2 Maxed, 60FPS even in the air. 4xAA/AF
GRAW2 2xAA4xAF
At 1024x768 (or 720p.)

Higher resolutions? Give me a monitor, I'll find out. ;)

Assuming the DS3L (the P5K SE for sure) has a 1:1 divider, you can easily do 400x7/8/9. Why settle for DDR2-600 when you can go to 800 (rated at). Change your divider or run the processor even faster and see how high you can go.

Gemini 2? No idea. Don't see why not, since its quite a tall cooler. Otherwise, its a case limitation. If you haven't already bought it, and your case fits it... you could still buy the Ultra 120. Or an Ultima 90, if your case doesn't fit it.

if your going from a amd system to a intel system with ddr2 then i would stay way from ocz ram since most of them need more than 1.8v to boot up at. meaning if you were to get it and build your system, it might not boot since the ram isn't getting enough juice. you'll have to purchase/borrow some cheap ddr2 ram that can boot at 1.8v then go into bios and up the voltage for your ocz ram.

crucial ballistix ram states it needs 2.2v to run but will boot at 1.8v just with loose timings.

i also have a e2140 but haven't built the system yet since school just started for me and haven't had the time to do it. my goal is at least 3ghz which i think should be easy enough.

I already bought the ram and did the rebate, so no returning. I can use the XMS's from my dad's comp if I have to

good to know you got that base covered :)
Seems a bit low for an x1950pro if your talking maxed at 1024x768.
yeah i agree, i would think at least @ 1280x1024 with those settings. but i guess connection speed and amount of people in said server also have to be accounted for.

so then this will be good?:
e2140
GeminII with 2 Masscool 120mm fans
Antec Sonata (old)
Ultra 500 Watt PS (old)
x1950pro 256mb
the hard drives from my current build (old)
2gb of OCZ Platinum rev 2
and Gigable p35-ds3L

it all comes out to be ~$400 (not counting the case, HD's, and the power supply because they are from previous builds)

hell the e2140 is pretty badass! i got one for my upcoming htpc =)

^^ nice clocks, i bet your running 1.6v through it to get it stable, lol.

what are your system specs?

also, nice wallpaper, MIB legos?

well it aint acually stable at those speeds, but around 3600Mhz it does a couple of hours orthos without a problem. I got this particular cpu just to play with and se how much i could push it and it's going in my htpc that im buliding later..

im using a vapochill Lightspeed to cool it and Vcore @ 1.58 for 3600.

my normal system is in my sig.
time to upgrade vid card and cpu soon. =)

about the wallpaper. yeah MIB lego, i really don't rember where i got it from though :/
