E2140 or E4500?

Just bought the $99 e2140 and ecs p4900mt
they have a e4500 and ecs 945 gzt for $138
should i return the $99 i bought or spend it on 1gb more memory/ or better gpu?
i have 1gb right now

i say the 4500 for the extra cache because on the 2xxx series 1MB total for both cores, so performance may suffer
 
But you have to consider the price difference too. Is the performance gap between the E4500 and the E2xxx series worth the extra price?

The only difference between the two is really just a 1MB vs 2MB L2 cache. Overclockability is about the same for the two.

not neccesarilly, consider the possiblity of an FSB wall, either cpu or mobo side. the e4500 has a 11x multi Vs the 7x on the e2140

the e4500 is gonna be a lot easier to clock high, even just going for 1066 FSB will give you 2.93 GHz, while the e2140 would still be stuck at 1.86

most good mobos will do >400 FSB without a problem, but with the OP asking about ECS mobos, im not sure if that would be a given in this case, also you will need much better ram to clock the e2140 high. to reach 2.93 GHz on the e4500 you need DDR2-533, while to do the same with a e2140, you would need ram running above 800 mhz

my preference would be the e4500

I'd get the e4500 bundle, honestly. Not because the CPU is faster (it is, but not 33%), but because I'd much rather use the Intel 945 chipset than any VIA. Intel designs are more robust, and generally higher performance. That is something I'd pay an extra $35 for, the faster processor is just icing on the cake.

QFT, i wasnt sure what the cheaper board was, but that type numeral did have a wiff of Via about it, and had my attention, and if that via chip has a low FSB wall, then OCing the 2140 will be hard
 
Well the biggest question is, does he intend to overclock? Neither of those boards are good for overclocking.

And in the case of no overclocking, the E4500 would be the better choice.

But without any extraneous limiting factors like motherboard or RAM, it isn't worth it to spend the extra cash on the E4500. As the reviews show, clock for clock the E2xxx series slower than the E4xxx series by a negligible amount.

And even worse, this shows the difference between a E4xxx and a E6xxx series should be just as small if not smaller.
