E-Trade has just unveiled a global trading platform that makes the discount brokerage firm the first company in the US to give customers the ability to trade foreign-listed stocks online.

The pilot project, which begins with 1,000 E-Trade customers this week, allows them to buy, hold and sell stocks in Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Britain. The rollout is expected to take two months before all customers have access, and could one day expand to 42 international markets.

... Waits for the screams and cries "Monopoly" from the audience just because they can.

Btw, what is this doing in here?

Its weird but I was able to purchase overseas stock (nintendo) through etrade last september... I wonder why they are pretending this was not possible before.

This is diffrent. Nintendo is a global traded company thats found on the US exchange systems. The article refers to global exchange systems which are not part of the American stock system.

It would also allow customers from those regions to sign up in etrade and buy US stocks and their own, allowing a complete global interaction.

This is really cool..

I personally use Scottrade and I hope they follow E-Trade's lead. This will open up the foreign markets by making the commissions cheaper to trade on those exchanges...

As of now you would have call your broker and pay the higher commission rate for a Broker assistance buy or sell...
