I'm wondering what others use for e-mail archiving/compliance? I work for a small university with a few thousand students and two exchange servers.
 
Exchange does have some archiving options built in. Personaly I've used GFI's mail archiver but this seems to be more for use in a business enviroment.
 
Yes, Exchange has the built in functionality of pst files, and it is atrocious.

Organizationally, I've just started using Symantec's Enterprise Vault. It is a great product, but it does require a delicate hand and a calculated approach.

Once you have a good implementation, it runs very well.
