E 8400 owners

The price on the e8400 at newegg seems to change a couple times a day. From yesterday to today, it went from 244.99 to 229.99 and now it's 239.99. All this time, it hasn't been in stock. Kinda weird to keep changing the price of something they don't have. Wonder how they figure that out....

That's what I was thinking. They figure if you LOOK at it, then you must want it, and the more people that look, the more people that want it. Even though they supply is ZERO, if the demand continues, the prices go up.

Weird about how online retailers handle things like this.

I mean when I go to wal-mart to buy something, the price stays the same no matter how many people want it. I guess it depends on the type of item. The Wii, for example. Online retailers sold it for the stock price no matter how many people wanted it.

While Microsoft suggested an e8400 intro price of something like 180 bux, online retailers sell it for what they think they can sell it for and for a HUGE profit. As long as people are buying it for that price, it won't come down any time soon.

The e8400s would be a GREAT deal it they were actually selling for what they're worth according to microsoft.
 
So I'll be joining the E8400 club here in a couple days. I'm pretty excited. After my Antec Neo HE fried my Mobo, CPU and Ram, I got Intel to RMA my dead e6400. For the life of me I can't overclock this thing past 2.66GHz. I can't wait to get my new e8400!

Write a batch file that connects to the page every few seconds, put it on a load of machines at work.
When the price gets really high, make a post on a few forums showing they are charging an exorbitant amount and put a link too.
Watch the price hit new highs :D
 
Why is there such a shortage of 8400s? Is it selling that well? Reminds me of 8800GTs. I don't even look at MSRPs of future products. They're worthless. Places will charge whatever they can sell them for.
 
i ordered a e8400 system from cyberpower on 1/28, just got off phone with them and it they said intel will not be shipping anymore e8400 untill APRIL! guess my 1500 dollar order wasnt worth filling before they ran out of what they had:mad:

You'd think something like that would be all over the hardware sites by now. Hard to keep that a secret, and not really like Intel to try.

Bill Gates is designing CPUs? :eek: I'm going to keep looking out my window for signs of the four horsemen.

I'm worrying Intel is going to make an announcement that would be something like all the E8400s available at launch have a fatal flaw and are going to burn..............a hole in my pocket. :mad:

Intel "All end users have violated the limited warranty by running voltage through the affected CPUs, please purchase a new CPU from one of our approved vendors"

Could this be a prelude to Intel having something like the Phenom defect?
I wonder.............
 
It feels like the problem is along the lines of...

The CPUs are so good that where they would normally become unstable and force you to back off on the overclock/voltage, these dont become unstable until much later meaning you really can push them too far too easily.

There will always be a certain number of failures anyway so we are also seeing those mixed in with the results of the very high speed burnt CPUs which makes it look like the problem happens when we dont push the CPUs hard as well.

Hopefully this is true and there is no errata problem.
Intel can fix it by making the chips unstable earlier :D
 
Oh great, now Im not sure if i made a total mistake getting the 8400.... I can still return it, but is this something to really be concerned about? Anyone know if the P35s will be updated to work better with these chips? And from the looks of things, as long as you stay below 1.4v, you shouldnt run into any problems, right?

nothing to worry about, clock it to 4GHz with the minimum voltage it needs and watch this space. I'd try to stick around 1.35V but thats just me :)
At 4GHz, you'll have way more power than you will need for gaming and you can tweak it more later if it turns out to be ok to do so.
Its an awesome CPU.
 
4 GHz is a simple OC with the E8400... Even if you only went to 4 GHz, you're still getting a hell of a deal.

If you're really concerned about degradation you can still get a decent OC and keep it within the "safe" max 1.365v. Overclocking takes time and testing, but I'm really amazed at what this chip can do... Orthos stable at 4 GHz on 1.264v is simply amazing.

I'm trying to find out the weight of the E8400 Retail Stock heatsink and fan. Anybody know this?

I'd like to throw on a Freezer Pro but if the stock cooler is 200grams then id take the weight advantage and stay with that. If it's half a kilo though i meas well get the Freezer init :)

LOL, that's your first mistake right there. Good luck getting it before the end of summer. You should've researched Cyberpower/IBuyPower before you made the grave mistake of ordering from them. Trust me, from personal experience, it is not worth dealing with them. You should just cancel your order. They have the worst, most pathetic customer service I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. They will literally make up stories and lies to keep you from getting your system on time (kinda like this no E8400 until April bullshit lmfao).

Trust me dude, just cancel your order. Order the parts and build it yourself or take it to Microcenter to get built if you can't do it yourself. You will thank me later.

The other thing is...I've read that the E8400 can be successfully overclocked to 3.6GHz using the stock cooler. I plan on doing this.

Would anyone strictly advise against doing this ? Would it be bad for the chip in the long/short term etc?

If I only had the stock cooler I'd go a bit higher if possible.
Stick around 1.35V max and you should have no problem.

Theres not a lot of point trying to give you safe temps as the readings you get are likely to be as useful as random numbers.
With 1.35V you arent going to push temperature boundaries anyway unless its really hot ambient or your case has bad airflow.

Only you will be able to find out.
You might not even get 3.6GHz but others have achieved 3.6 on stock volts so it shouldnt be hard.

Some people have a hard time getting part 3.6 GHz, while others can push their prrocessors to 4.5 GHz +.

I love my E8400 either way. 3.6 GHz @ 1.120v (actual) with NB, SB, and memory voltages ALL AT THE LOWEST POSSIBLE BIOS SETTINGS. 4.2 GHz @ 1.265v. 4.4 GHz @ 1.325v. (Q745A)

I can get 4.0GHz (8x500) at 1.29v

Are those stable? Man, if those are stable you got yourself a gem of a chip there.

Only raised FSB just to see what she'd do. Idle temps are around 42-45. Using a Scyth Mine for cooling.
 
Have had my E8400 for a couple weeks. I just bumped the FSB to 400 with the OEM fan/heatsink and my Gigabyte mobo is stock right out of the box. I'm happy with 3.6GHz and the 1600MHz FSB that the Extreme Editons have. :cool:
 
i sold mine the other day, have had it sitting here for a month and still no updated bios from abit. got tired of waiting so i said ^&$# it and sold mine. cant believe it takes so damn long to come up with a new bios. what a bunch of bullshit!

Is it worth upgrading to a new i5 or i7 from a E8400 OC'd at 4GHz for games like Team Fortress 2, Bad company 2, Starcraft 2?

Or is the bottleneck mainly GPU since I'm still using a 8800GT 512 and considering a GTX 460 1gb.

Also considering putting a F3-8500CL7D-8GBRL into my Gigabyte DS3L motherboard. Can anyone chime in and let me know if those are compatible. The DS3L says it supports 1066 so...

A GTX 460 1GB is not going to bottleneck your card that drastically the point of not noticing any improvements with the card. I would do this for the time being to give your system a longer life. It can hold you over to Ivy Bridge next year.

That mobo is a DDR2 one correct? If so you cannot use DDR3 in that board even though it says it supports 1066 ram. If you are looking for a more snappier system I would highly recommend getting a SSD. Next to the video card its the best upgrade for your system.

I sold my E8400 a month ago, and got the i7 2600K.

Massive difference. Everything is snappier. My video processing is much faster.

One hell of a good choice for me..
 
I'm still pushing this 8400 in my system and it's not slowin down. I haven't yet gone the OC route yet, but why not at this point.

Currently playing Serious Sam 3, Darkness II, BF 3, Hard Reset with no real issues. Only one that's hurting it is BF3, but even then, take down the settings and it's good to go.

Resolution is 16x9. I'm sure within a year I'll have to update, but still waiting for the CPU crusher we used to see with cames like Far Cry, Crysis, Doom III....it hasn't come....that can be a good thing.
 
A well-overclocked E8400 is probably still capable of pushing most GPUs for the next couple years - depending on some other criteria.

I'm running a 4.3 GHZ E8400 right now (with a 4870 1GB, previously a 4870x2 which recently died on me), it's fine for non quad core games (admitably a small amount of games overall) but it does show its age in games like BF3, however games like Red Orchestra 2 or Sins of a Solar Empire (including Rebellion) it's just fine due to the games only using one thread. Diablo 3 runs just fine @ 1920x1200 maxed out, though I suspect that's more in part due to the dated looking graphics engine.
