E-450 clock steps

Hi,

Question about my AMD E-450 (Bobcat).
I know the clock frequency is reduced (from max 1.65 GHz) to save power and I suspect this control of the clock is not continuous (not every frequency below the max is a valid one).

My ResourseMonitor (wndows 7) shows 50% most of the time, so I suspect this is a valid frequency.

What are the valid steps for E-450?

Why is it never below 50%?

Regards,
Adrian

No, it's a fairly new laptop, with Norton antivirus and I'm always careful...
You probably misread my question thinking "never _above_ 50%".

There is your problem..... I properly configured PC, with good AV, will be in the 3~5% CPU utilization with just OS and no Internet, games, etc running...

Well, OK, CPU utilization is slightly higher that your figure, perhaps 6-7% but that's because of ResourceMonitor app running (I can see that taking most of my CPU).

But my point was about the Clock Frequency!
That never goes below 50% of the max 1.65 GHz, even with that low CPU load.

i think my e350 goes from 800 to 1.6 a lot, the c50 i have in a netbook only goes from 800 to 1.0 not really sure the e450 but i would of thought it would be able to downclock to at least 1ghz. make sure you are using balanced mode in windows. Im also not sure but you use to need the amd cpu driver back in XP not sure if you have to worry about it now

Pretty sure my E350 only gets down to 800MHz even at idle.

I wouldn't worry about it.

Not that I'm worried, I was just trying to understand why it never goes for lower clock if there is nothing to do, or maybe that's just windows...
Anyway, what I was trying to do was to see if the fan cooler would stop if the CPU is basically idle. It seems like it won't.

I think that's because after a certain point, the power savings does not justify the slower performance, especially the delay in clocking up from say 400 mhz. Also, power savings are usually voltage related, not clock speed. Probably below a certain voltage the chip will no longer function properly, so they just chose a reasonable speed for that voltage.

Use brazostweaker Link to figure out your various pstates. I use it to under volt and under clock my netbook to get better battery life. (you can eek out 20-45 or more minutes of battery life by using it.)
