Hello. Having some harddrive transfer issues... Not sure its the right forum, but I guess its close enough.

I'm using an MSI K8N NE04. It has 4 SATA ports and 2 IDE ports on the same controller. It also has an onboard SIL 3114 SATA RAID controller with 4 ports. It also has 1gb pc3200 ram that is 100% working (memtest, 24 hours) and a xp3500+ 64-bit CPU that is also working as intended.

I have connected 1 Seagate 7800.9 250GB SATA HD to each one of the 8 sata ports. These 8 discs are in a dynamic disc (RAID-5) configuration in Windows 2003 RC2 64-bit and formatted as NTFS with 4kb cluster size. (Yes, I know its software raid)
I also have a craptastic PCI IDE controller (SIL 0680) with 4 250gb 7800.8 Seagate HD's attached. I've tried removing it for debugging purposes but it appears to make no difference.

My C: is located on a 250gb WD drive that is Primary Master on the IDE ports and its only used for the operating system. I also have a DVD reader as Primary Slave as well as 1 250GB Seagate 7800.9 IDE HD as Secondary Master and another one as Secondary Slave. The IDE drives are configured as basic discs and formated with NTFS using a 4kb cluster size.

Thats the background information. Here comes the issues and weird behaviour.

When I download from another computer on the same LAN (Over a 100mbit link) to the RAID-5 array it works perfectly. It downloads the files at 10 megabyte/sec with no interruptions. I tried filling the entire 1.6TB array like this. Worked flawlessly. CPU utilization at 15-30%.

When I run SiSoft Sandras disk benchmark it takes a LOT of time but when it completes it says avg transfer rate is 60 megabyte/sec which im perfectly happy with.

Here comes the odd part. When I copy from one of the IDE drives (Either onboard IDE or PCI controller) it goes quite fast at first (200gb in 60 minutes is what it says) and keeps going like that for 300-2000mb, then the estimated time starts going up, pretty soon there is no estimated time and its not moving on to the next file.. it just sits there. CPU utilization still at 15-30%. After one or two minutes it starts copying again and returns to its old pace. Then it does the same thing after another 300-2000mb. End result, copying from another drive takes a LOT of time. It does this after a clean format of the array and after copying stuff around the array for a day. So its probably not a defragmentation issue.

I assumed the IDE cable or the drive was faulty so i replaced both the drive and the cable. Same thing, replaced it again (I have lots of drives).. Still same problem.

I'm using the IDE driver that came with the nforce drivers instead of the one supplied by Windows - Could this be the problem?

Copying from the RAID-5 array to the same array (as in, duplicating files) goes quite fast with no stops in the copying process.


Any help would be appreciated.. I've run out of ideas.
