i think i may have a dying raptor after 3 months of use. and yes, for those who hate WD, this will be my very first (out of 8 WD drives) that would have gone bad. it boots slow, which my other thread is about. i have been moving all my data off the raptor onto a drive on my other computer. the only thing i have yet to try is update my bios. i just have not had the time.

hopefully someone can help me out a bit.

edit: my system will lock up either transferring files, surfing the internet, playing a game, so pretty much random. specs are in my sig.
 
Damn that sucks. I'm assuming that you're coming from a 7200 RPM drive? Did you notice...a huge difference in performance? (Before it started messing up)
 
Get that data off immediatly and RMA that sucker. mine took just took a shit with no warning and I lost 90% of everything on the drive.

i'll run WD tools and see if the drive is bad. i was moving a ton of data onto my storage box (no, it does not have raid either..but next storage box will). i did came a 7200 rpm drive, actually built my box 3 months ago from an amd 2800 xp. big improvement. but i should really be getting the data off this thing.
 
well, i tried and tried and tried, but i am unabled to find in Data Lifeguard Tools where to test my hard drives. if anyone can help me out with this, i would be so very gracious...and of course, then i can RMA this dying drive.
 
I'm was setting up a new build for a workstation for my boss and got the 150gb raptor from newegg .. had trouble installing windows until I used the sata power plug in ..everything installed fast and fine then ... after I got the comp all setup , I was using it surfing the web for about 15 minutes ...then it just locks up. Rebooted and windows can no longer read the drive ..

so, just chucked in an 80gb ide 7200rpm drive and said screw it on the 150gb raptor.

I have been running a 74gb raptor for well over a year now without a single hiccup thru several different mobos tho .. hmmm

sure, not a problem:

First you select the HDD you want to scan (square box) and then you hit the button to run diagnostics (circle).

Your problem may be that you installed the DL Tools and not Diagnostics (trust me I don't get it either). You may need to download this:http://support.wdc.com/download/windlg/WinDLG.zip

you're right, i do have the DL Tools and not Diagnostics. i'll look at it tonight :) thx
 
well, both quick and extended tests passed, but the SMART status failed. not only that, but i hear 2 knocks when my system boots up. any ideas?

which smart test failed? it should show you. Then call WD: get RMA.

just talked with WD tech support, he said my drive was bad and so it is being RMA'd. i like their policy of being able to send me the drive and then me sending my bad drive back to them instead of having to wait for a new drive to come to me.
