So, I turn on my computer this morning, and I hear a loud screeching noise. After freaking out, I turned off my computer, disconnected my drives one at a time, and found the problem drive to be the brand new Western Digital SE 80GB drive that I bought earlier this month.
It seems to work fine; the screeching noise stopped when I booted into Windows, and I was able to back up the data that was on it. I still have to run the Western Digital diagnostics, but hopefully I can RMA it for a replacement.
What could have caused this? The drive was working perfectly fine up until last night, just seven hours before I turned it on this morning. I know hard drives aren't the most reliable devices, but this seems kind of unusual. Could this have been caused by something other than a faulty drive? I'd hate to get a replacement drive, only to have it die in the same way because of, say, a motherboard defect.
