I currently have an 18 month old PowerColor 4870 512Mb card that is showing light son the card then crashing during the launch of any 3d game but if I restart the machine the problem is gone. Until it will crash after a period of time. These periods of time are getting shorter. I know the card is dying so I'm doing research of what to upgrade to.

I have an intel quad core q9450
2GB 667Mhz DDR 2
DFI - Lan Party Dark

I play on a 22inch monitor at 1680x1050.

I'm currently thinking about:
ATI - 4890
ATI - 5770
nVidia - GTX260

Any brand advice would be welcome, I won't be buying PowerColor again.

My opinion? Sell it as is to someone that might be able to repair it, then add some cash and get a nice 5850. Perfect for you imho. Sapphire and XFX are good ones.

5770, GTX260 are sidegrades

4890 is a pretty small upgrade

I'd try to get a 5850 or wait for 5830

you could also try baking your video card

Who does video card repair services? I doubt if its worth anything to send my broken G92 to anyone. It does the same thing - hangs the entire PC during any gaming. I did some hard overclocking on it and totally ruined the card. Still works in 2D/Windows though.

5770 should be fine for your resolution although it won't be much of an upgrade unless you want dx11

Yeah thats what I was thinking, alot of those are side grades but the difference in price between the 5770 and the 5850 is almost £100 and thats alot. In an ideal world i would buy a 5870 and be done with it. DX 11 suppoort is a bonus thats why I was thinking of taking the 5770. Any one know when the 5830 will be out? and possible specs? I might just try and survive with this dying (and almost dead) card for as long as I can. Whens the next refresh, when are the new nVidia parts coming they might bring a bit of competition to the market.

Baking looks interesting. Might have to try that. And if it goes wrong who cares the card was dying anyway. and if it works try and get a crossfire configuration on the go.

I would check with Powercolor. 18months is a year and a half obviously. I've had a number of devices fail on me lately and I found a few of them to have 3 year warranties. If it's still under warranty maybe you can get a refurbed card.
