DXVA -- Does It Really Matter?

My home theatre configuration is a single CentOS 6 server running MythTV 0.26. The other machines in my house are largely Windows 7 Ultimate running XBMC as the front-end software.

It works really great for those machines but there is one more machine that I'd like to roll out as a frontend. The problem is that I only have a Windows XP license for that machine. It has a respectable (by HTPC standards) nVidia card -- a 9800GT -- and a mid-range Core Duo.

The machine will be driving 720p rather than 1080p so I'm wondering if the lack of support for DXVA that I've read about for Windows XP really matters in this case.
 
Strictly speaking DXVA is not required as long as your CPU can cope with all the decoding duties and a Core2Duo should (I assume you mean Core2) - however the CPU is a general purpose computing unit processor and will consume a lot more power during decoding than the dedicated DXVA decoder on the video card would. Also, a 9800GT will also be something of a power hog for this usage, relatively speaking.

I'm not well up on the issues of DXVA on the 9800GT under XP - however you could also consider running xbmcbuntu, a stripped down lightweight version of Ubuntu with XBMC built in (you just get it to auto-boot directly to the XBMC Home panel).

Thanks. I've tried various Linux flavors with XBMC as a front-end but they all have problems of one kind or another.

One of the fundamental WAF issues is (1) netflix support through a browser and (2) XFINITY TV support through the browser. I've tried Netflix-Desktop on Linux and while Netflix is okay, it's hard to get XFINITY under Linux to be stable let alone watchable.
