trying to figure this one out. Keep getting this error on and off. Some days I can game for ages other days its in a few minute sputs. Always this error.

I've tried doing memory tests, stress tests or cpu, gpu, gpu memory, etc and the machine is rock solid during all those things.

Install a new driver version around that time?

Can you check device manager to see which device disappeared, or does it crash/reboot?

it does not crash, blue screen or reboot. There is also nothing in the event logs. Nothing is gone in device manager but there is really no way to monitor that while playing something.

Well, supposedly a gpu error, anyway. Is this with no overclock, or at least default configuration? Card is well seated, and power connectors good and seated?

what system, your sig one? disable OC and then ddu/new driver.

oh wow, no that is old. I am not overclocked anymore. 2700x, 32gb ram, 1080ti fe.

so this morning it was happening again constantly. Since about noon time, its been perfectly fine, hasn't crashed a game.

bios up to date, for mobo and gpu? have you DDUd and installed newest drivers?

I get that when I push my OC too hard on the GPU. Try lowering clocks, if you're at stock already, go lower to test
