It's out folks, no hacks or workarounds needed. Just installed the 3 updates listed today. While DX11 wasn't specifically mentioned in any of them, when I rebooted, POOF, there it was. Just in time for my 5770 too :D

Good news for our Vista running brothers/sisters. Now we just need Dirt 2 and the new STALKER to be released so we can enjoy it.

Does this only download if you have a dx11 capable GPU?

Completely updated and dxdiag still shows dx10.

DX11 will run on DX10 hardware, but with the DX11 only features disabled. You'll still enjoy DX11's new multi-core improvements and ComuteShader. But, ComputeShader will run in 4.0/4.1 mode instead of 5.0.

As you can see I have a directx9 GPU, and it worked fine. Reboot or recheck windows update, maybe you missed something?

Refreshed windows update again and a new one finally appeared. DX11 is now installed.

The DX11 API is bringing with it support for ComptueShaders 4.0/4.1 on DX10/10.1 hardware.

On DX11 hardware you get ComputeShaders 5.0.

His statement that "DX11 will run on DX10 hardware" is false. It is impossible. The 5000 series are the first cards to support DX11. All DX10 cards will run a DX10 code path in games if supported, you cannot run a DX11 code path on a DX10 card. DX11 does have an inherent nature of multi-threading, and this should help optimize multi-core usage in the driver and API side of things, even on DX10 hardware if the DX11 API is installed, but you still won't be running a DX11 code path on a DX10 card, impossible.

Yes, compute shaders in DX10 (4.0/4.1) is based on SM 4.0, DX10. That isn't DX11, or compute shaders 5.0.

No, SM 4 is DX10 and SM 4.1 is DX10.1, but it will be enabled under the DX11 API, not DX10 or DX10.1 API. Full feature set is for DX11 hardware only, but DX11 is backwards compatible with the others.

DX11 is a subset of DX10/10.1 and are also supposed to have optimizations for directx like multithreading which is supposed to make games run faster under DX11 on DX10/10.1 cards.

You are confusing terminologies. Read what I said above.

For pre-dx11 hardware you may get dx's multithreading support, but iirc it requires drivers that support the feature.

WARP as I understand it enables directx11 stuff to work on the CPU, but not in a way that would allow dx10 hardware to run dx11 games... so I'm really confused as to what it's really for, maybe widgets or user interface stuff.

"d3d 10 level 9" is a dx11 feature that will allow dx10 ??? something to run on dx9 hardware.... but once again that's gonna need driver or application support, and I don't see it happening. Here's a quote from TechARP

"Direct3D 10-Level-9 is a specialized driver for the Direct3D 10 runtime. Therefore, game developers get the higher performance of the Direct3D 10 runtime (versus the Direct3D 9 runtime) while still targeting the Direct3D 9 hardware."

Ment superset, not subset. :) I'm not native english. Didn't catch your edit before I replied.

Anyway, I agree with SicKlown42012 on this one.

Microsoft also disclosed that DirectX 11 will add features to existing DirectX 10-compatible hardware, though it was not immediately clear what those features may be.

Compatibility with DirectX 10 and 10.1 hardware, as well as support for new DirectX 11 hardware
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53810

If DX11 is compatible with DX10 hardware, how can it then be wrong to say that DX11 will run on DX10 hardware? If it couldn't, it would be wrong to call it compatible.

I would agree that it doesn't have full support for the hardware spesific features that came with DX11, but I wouldn't go to the extent of saying that DX11 will not run on DX10 hardware.

As SicKlown42012 said, DX11 will run on DX10 hardware. People managed to run the Unigine demo under DX11, though they didn't get tesselation option.

It isn't running SM 5.0 or DirectCompute 5.0 on DX10 hardware, period.

It will run SM 4.0/4.1 and DirectCompute 4.0/4.1, which is DX10 level, on DX10 hardware.

Only DX11 hardware, the AMD 5000 series, can currently run SM 5.0 and DirectCompute 5.0.

This statement: "DX11 will run on DX10 hardware" is false and misleading.

All the above I agree upon, but not the last line.

Directx11 API brings new features and optimizations also for DX10/10.1 hardware. These features does not exist under DX10 API. When those features and optimizations are run, they are run on DX11 API, not DX10 API. The DX10 API don't have them.

To say they are running DX10 API, when the API is DX11 is false and misleading, since they are running features that the DX10 API doesn't have even though their hardware is DX10.

"DX11 will run on DX10 hardware, but with limitations" is what I find to be most accurate based on the above.

Edit: I'm not trying to split hair here and I have much respect for your opinion, but I think its important to point out since the DX11 API might add to the gaming experience also for DX10/10.1 owners. If I would have believed that the game would be the same anyway if it was DX11 API on DX10 hardware vs. DX10 API on DX10 hardware, I wouldn't see the point to disagree. I hope you understand where I'm going with this. :)

Thanks Tamlin_WSGF for expanding on my previous statement. From everything I've read about DX11, games don't have to have separate DX9/DX10/DX11 paths, only DX9/DX11. If you have DX11 on your OS, a DX11 game, and DX10 hardware, the DX11 pathway will still run, but with only the features that DX10 cards support. For instance, look into the DX11 Engine Benchmark thread we have here, and you'll see that both 4800/GTX 200 owners are able to run the DX11 pathway, even with DX10 hardware. It's just that the DX11 only features are not available. I could be wrong, but the direct evidence from a DX11 supporting software so far have backed up my initial impressions.

Here's a post showing DX11 vs. DX10 rendering pathway on DX10 hardware using the Unigine Benchamrk.
