DX10 on Win XP

I highly doubt that. I'm betting on FUD.
It would make no sense to give XP, what is probably the main selling point of Vista, to gamers.

Oh my. Yet another claim that DX10 is coming to XP.

It's fud... and really stupid fud at that. DX10 will not, and can not function in XP.. it's not going to happen. The amount of work required to make it happen is huge. One of the big reasons DX10 won't work in XP is that the kernel that DX10 requires simply does not exist in XP.... and that's not something a "patch" or a "plug in" is gonna fix, soooo......

Since there's a preview build on the page linked, you could always just download it yourself and try it.

Since my XP broke down three days ago, I've been using Vista only. I already miss XP so much. If I knew Dx10 would work on XP as good as on Vista, I'd uninstall Vista immediately.

Don't believe everything you read on the 'Inter-Webs' folks, do some background and fact checking of your own..

This, conveniently, makes use of the "F" in FUD. It is and has 'PREYed' on the fears (read: dislikes) of many for a while now, making all sorts of announcements that never come to fruition.

Three days? And you've used XP for how long?

What's the odds you said the exact same thing when you first installed XP? What's the likely-hood you'll be honest about it?

I have predicted this for a long time. It will begin as a rumor, then eventually more and more people will follow.

After that, there will be a massive argument over "DX10 XP or Vista? Rumors true?";

If you guys think about what this is, it's simply a new version of DirectX. It's just software.

It's not like we're jumping from AGP 8x to PCi-Express 16x here. Software can be broken. People can rise above. :)

Edit: It's a start.

I have to agree. I'm not going to say it can, and I'm not going to say it cannot, but of course Microsoft is going to tell you that "DX10 absolutely, positively cannot work on XP". So think about what you're saying when you reiterate what Microsoft is telling you. They are, after all, making billions of dollars selling Vista. Do you think they're going to give you a reason to stick with XP? Of course not.

Edit - Also, it's just bits and bytes. With a little hard work, creativity, and guts, you can program anything to work with anything. It's not like throwing potassium into a cup of water.

That's the spirit. :D

Edit: Speaking of which, I just got the DX10 libraries from my Vista disc which has been collecting dust. Let's see if I can get past that little error now that I've got the REAL library.

What happens when you throw potassium into water???
Anyways, Microsoft implemented 2 methods to increase sales of Vista and thus their revenue.
For the majority of people they have made XP unattainable as of the end of this year. (Yes you can buy a Vista license and install XP with it. But does your mom or grandmother know this)
For us enthusiasts who would say to hell with you we are sticking with XP they came out and made DX10 a Vista exclusive. (Sounds like a video game sorta).

It is in their best interest to make it this way. Does it mean it can't be done any other way? No.
Have they said it is interwoven into the kernel of Vista? Yes it makes business sense.
Could it be reverse engineered to work in another OS? Of course as stated before it is just software. Like DRM.
This song can't play without DRM keys blah blah to unlock it.
Really? You sure about that?

Alright, now we're getting somewhere.

It seems to have checked out all of the DirectX10 libraries and agreed to run, but then had a conflict with another dll. :)

Here we go again.

I won't even go into the whole discussion about wether it's possible or not.

But i can tell you this:

While i play DX10 games on vista in whatever how many months, you guys sit there on XP, trying to make a game work with some self made dll hell that'll give you grief in pretty much any game out there, that was designed to run DX10.

By the time the "DX10 for XP" project will be anything that is usable, Vista will be patched and optimized and be as stable and fast as XP ever was. And it'll play games made for DX10. And you?

You'll sit there on your windows XP box, waiting for the latest update from the opensource programmer to implement the latest DX10a update for months, only to find out that yet another dll call results in a complete game crash. And then you come bitching here saying that you spent money on a DX10 card for nothing...

Happy fragging.

At least we're not willingly bending over. We're fighting back.

It seems to me that I read that the X Box 360 runs on Windows XP. Correct me if I am wrong. I know that I read that Microsoft said that the X Box 360 would be upgraded to run Direct X 10 in the future. So........

Fighting back? Willingly bending over?

Get a life dude. Or better yet, get laid.

Too much hostility. Of course since you seem to know the outcome before the project even started your life must be much easier to live.

Though, as they say in sports (when a great team on paper loses to a poor team on paper), that's why they play the games.

To put it succinctly, you never know!

If we are wrong we are wrong. BUT! If we are right then sir it would be you who was short sighted.

Time will reveal all.

MS said that the 360 uses some pieces of DX10 functionality, but it will NEVER have complete DX10 suite.

How many of you actually checked the track record for this "project" or even this "company"?

They've made outlandish claims like this in the past.. and came up short..Not to say the guy doesn't have a good head on his shoulders and reason for his motivation, but they are a bit ambitious and have yet to prove effective. As stated on one of his many blogs, this "AlkyProject" is his goal for the next five years.. I do wonder how many ppl he has working with him, as the "AlkyProject" is not devoted soley to allowing Dx10 on XP, but rather a more ambitious goal of allowing any software on any platform (admirable at best); thus, OsX, Linux and Windows..

Big dreams sometimes have a way of falling short, or degrading other dreams... I think it'd be best if he started smaller and actually was able to release something tangible.

Seriously, think for yourselves....

At least we're not willingly bending over. We're fighting back.
What are you, actually, doing again? So far, I haven't seen anything but swinging from someone else's self-proclaimed glory..

Edit - Also, it's just bits and bytes. With a little hard work, creativity, and guts, you can program anything to work with anything.

Right, and the Hoover dam is just some concrete.

It is just bits a bytes, but you are grossly oversimplifing the workload required to move DX10 to XP.

Why would MS want to make a DX10 "patch" for XP??? So, they have no reason to market a new product?? That would be an unwise move. Make money or don't make money?? Hmmmm....

As far as anyone altering XP on their own... Have fun. I'd like to see it, but I honestly don't know if it would be worth the effort?

If you're using Windows XP and have not purchased a copy of Vista, you have no right, nor should you feel entitled to have a right to use DirectX10. At the heart of the matter, what you're complaining about is not getting something for free. Do you complain when a company releases a expansion to a game because it costs you more money? No? Why, then, would you complain about DirectX10?

Software is software, whether it's a computer game or a library. Development costs a significant amount of resources, and these resources need to be recouped in some manner (e.g. by selling games or operating systems). Releasing a new operating system after supporting the old one with constant regular updates for 6 years seems more than generous to me. I don't know about you, but my $120 for an OEM license 6 years ago sure went a long way.

I think Maximum PC said that while it is POSSIBLE for DX10 to run on XP, it's not happening due to marketing and some software work that would be required. (And by some I mean hundreds of hours of work) It would be nice if this worked, but I am not betting on it *Looks for best price on Vista Ultimate 64 and 2GB DDR500*

It might be possible to get DX10 refrast running on WinXP with a huge effort (i.e. not this guy and this shenstasic fake). Getting DX10 accelerated graphics on WinXP is very, very unlikely.

Dude.

I mean, I understand your view on the 'free software' thing, but $200 for a DirectX update? That's like telling you that the next version of Firefox - Firefox II would cost you $200 for a 'license'. It's not free software anymore, and you need to pay a premium for it!

Basically, you're advocating the use of propiertary software in Windows. Want an update, pay for it. Want something else? Pay for it. Want it to work in a different operating system? No way man.

As for the updates, they aren't anywhere near as effective as service packs, and those are free too.

[Snip..] I understand your view on the:confused: 'free software' thing, but $200 for a DirectX update?

I mean, no man or women who develops and produces software, or API's, deserves a fair share to pay theirs -- and their families-- way..

Basically, you're advocating the use of propiertary software in Windows. Want an update, pay for it. Want something else? Pay for it. Want it to work in a different operating system? No way man. Want to put in the hours to develop it? Pay for it.. Wanna make a living? Pay for it.. Wanna pay for bills... Wanna Pay for insurance..Wanna pay for kids..Wanna..Wanna..Wanna.. Who pays? YOU?

As for the updates, they aren't anywhere near as effective as service packs, and those are free too.

I'm drunk. You're spoilt'. the world owe's you a living...:confused::rolleyes:

I'm the one laughing. Take a screenshot of any DX10 (SM4.0) code running on this bogus emulator. The DX SDK is available for free and has several DX10 .exe samples. If anything this is just a refrast hack that bypasses the hardware SM4 check.

edit2: this is an OpenGL wrapper, not even a DX10 port. Geometry shaders are not supported (Tutorial 13) and even some very simple shaders don't work (tutorials 5 and 6), forget about the only non-trivial tutorial (#14) which doesn't even run. None of the precompiled DX10 samples work except for the blank window project, which instantly crashes when you move the window.

Maybe you could really flex your muscles in MS's face and only buy opengl games ;) I hear it runs on any os :p
