Alright...

After reading so much about Crysis, I am wondering about DX10.

Right now, I am running a BFG 7800GT OC card. I have considered picking up another one and running in SLI mode (I figure it would cost me around $125 total), but I'd still be in DX-9.

Is DirectX 10 going to be that big of a deal? Should I just save the funds and pick up a lower end Nvidia 8 series card?

Do you want a short answer?

Or a long answer that will require some reading/research of your own; along with good 'ol fashion patience?

I havent been following Crysis that heavily, but I was under the assumption that it was going to be a while before we had any DX10 required games, but dont quote me on that.

If any upcoming game was going to require it though, Crysis would, because it looks pretty intensive.

Short answer is fine by me.

Research and reading is no problem. Just seems like it's all opinion until we see it in practical use.

I trust other's opinions more than my own on topics such as this as my technical proficiency is (comparatively) low.

Sounds like the day Crysis comes out, I'll be dropping a few hundred bucks. Until then, I'll stick with my single card setup (which by the way has been suiting me just fine).

Thanks guys.

i would save your money and wait for direct x 10 titles to come out then sell your 7800gt and buy whatever card you can at the time.

DX10 is definitely necessary if you want to watch NVIDIA's awe-inspiring Cascades demo in Windows Vista.

those flight simulator X pictures look awfully sketchy to me... & Why would they need to change the sky textures for a dx10 renderer?

I showed them to my wife just a little while ago and didn't tell her which was which and what it was for - and she picked the DX9 as looking better than the DX10. She said she liked the look of the water better in the DX9 version

p.s., resistance is futile ;)

You do know that the DX10 shot of Flight Simulator X is not really a screenshot at all, but rather an "artist's concept" of what Direct X 10 might look like in Flight Simulator X. In other words, a complete crock of shit. No I don't have a link to back that up as I heard it quite some time ago. But really, don't get your hopes up!

lol i like the random single picture of halo in there.

Me too. It almost makes me smurf a little when I see it.

er.. no, no it doesn't. But it is pretty realistic looking. Is it an actual render?

I think that was mentioned in an issue of Computer Gaming World (now Games for Windows) during a preview of DirectX 10. I remember reading a disclaimer that the Flight Sim X shot was only a concept image.

Yeah too bad their "DX10" shots of Crysis are really DX9. Crysis is very much a DX9 game.

Yep! Apparently, the demoing for Crysis before the 8800's came out were done on ATI X1900 or X1950 series cards. Should be quite a while before there are any DX10 required games out. ;)

DX10 is not going to be a minimum requirement for any game anywhere in the near future. I'm not even sure I could name a required DX9 or better game off the top of my head (or even if there are any). Just because a game has the capability to use DX10, doesn't mean its required.

Actually, most PC these days require DX9, at least practically, because while lots of games have a DX8 renderer, who wants to play with that? The DX9 is much prettier!

At anywho, even Crysis will not require DX10 I believe, but it will for all the eye candy. I sorta doubt it will be out this year. But starting next year, there should be about half a dozen titles that will use DX10, so that being the case, that's a very quick pickup of DX10, and I think that you'll see it more and more pretty quickly compared to previous versions of DX.
