DX10 is do-able on Windows XP

I don't think the guy who wrote that article has any idea what he's talking about.

Sure... yeah right.

I'll believe it when I see it.... I have a really hard time believing anything that I read on the Inq.

It may be do-able on XP but would be sluggish compared to DX9 code. Most gamers sticking with XP would wind up running the game in DX9 because of this. Once DX10 becomes mainstream (at least another year), almost every gamer will make the switch to Vista.

Simply because Microsoft would lose so much sales on Vista because most people wouldn't even bother migrating to that bloated pig with lipstick and stick with XP instead.

No, it's true.

I'm running DX10 on XP. It's a patch, I wrote it myself. I was even able to get this DX9 card to run it.

I'm a genius.

It is known that DX10 is doable on XP. However, from a business stand point, not too mention the time spent on an older operating system that they working on phasing out, it's just not cost effective. Vista is the focal point.
Also on that note, Service Pack 3 will be the last major XP update. After that, it will diminish like Windows 98 did. I won't even get on topic of Windows ME.

Short answer: Direct X 10 is 100% not doable on windows XP. Period.

Long answer: Direct X 10 uses a completely new driver protocol for interacting with the system. This would lead you to having to completely rewrite the windows XP kernel, Write your own video card drivers, then work on hacking the Direct X 10 code. (By the way Direct X 9 itself is just NOW being able to be emulated on Linux albeit poorly.)

Inquirer has also been proven to be a big piece of crap that never knows what they are talking about.

Vista FTW!!! lol

Hang on...

XP FTW!!! lol

Nah....

Win CE FTW!!! lol

Vista isn't far enough from XP that it's impossible to do, MS just doesn't want to. Sooner or later, they'll have to give in when they realise Vista isn't being adapted as they want.
Game companies will complain that DX9 is restricting their development of games, and therefor their profit.

MS is going to lose this war, for many enthusiasts Vista is the hated stepchild, they don't want it. MS will have to cave in and release DX10 for XP, it's inevitable. Even a stupid corporation like MS can't be that fucking greedy.

Vista is gaining populatiry and DX10 is THE major selling point therefore releasing DX10 for XP is suicude for Vista.

I've talked to more people who think Vista is a resource hog (it is) and won't switch to it. Their only selling point is a lie.

lol right. this by far is the best answer of the day.

looks to me like vista is slowly gaining popularity..obviously its gonna be a while before vista has a decent market share but thats were the new tech is going to happen and MS isn't going to look back on XP in the process.

how bout you use it first before judging it

the only reason people are moving to vista is that it comes on every hp, sony, etc. at best buy, which is where most people buy their computers.

Thank you, oh sweet voice of reason. :)

Really??

I must be insane..along with a lot of others here, I actually went out *gasp* and bought it...and DX10 had nothing to do with why.... See some here actually beta tested it for a long time before it was released, learned a good bit about and discovered that it is, indeed, a good stable os.... but of course you would have to acyually use it to know this...

And DX10 under XP ain't ever going to happen... no matter how badly some want it too... call it greed if you want, but there is a lot more to it than that.

Yeh I ran Beta 2 of Vista for 12+ months, only stopped using it a few months ago when the licence ran out.

If I were to buy a new rig today, then I would buy Vista.

XP or Vista? DX10 or DX9? Hell, the whole thing is giving me headaches! I'll just get both and have dual boot on my new system ----- hey, wait a minute:eek: !! I just figured it all out! It's all a big conspiracy! MS wants all this confusion so that everyone buys both, and doubles their profits. Those devious bastards, they're absolutely diabolical!!!

I was skeptical too but I'm loven vista. I even wrote something up in a thread about DX10 in XP. I like XP and all but I will say I'm glad I switched.

I went Vista Business right when it was released and never looked back. It worked very well for me and all the software I used ran. Not to mention I get to use all 4gbs of my ram.

Ok, there was some funneeeh stuff in here so far. Keep it coming.

I also copied the most creative answers so far from most of these threads (you know, they keep coming up once in a while).

In a couple months or a year or so, i will make a thread with all these funny things that i keep reading and then i want to see those people see winding them out of it. All those

"I'll NEVER use Vista because Windows XP will not die and MS will have to release DX10 for XP because they won't sell Vista" <- the guy who doesn't have the coin to buy Vista and keeps hoping

or the even better

"There is a guy in <enter some remote location or website> who already cracked DX10 and he just has to adjust some .dlls to make it work in XP" <- the guy who believes everything posted on the web, even the inquirer.

followed by

"I will NEVER put Vista on my PC, it's a resource hog and full of bugs. I'll stick with XP foreva!" <- the guy who has the money but never installed vista because he's clueless about the resources the OS uses.

I have a reality check for most of you guys: How many of you still use Windows 2000 or Windows 98? Or how many thought that DX7 would finally make it's way to DOS 6.2? Thought so.

The above has been said countless times, over and over. It's always just one more .dll that has to be adjusted. MS is only a couple months away from releasing it for XP, MS will pull Vista from the market because it's so bad.

Funny thing is: 95% of the people saying it have never tried Vista and the other 4.5% can't afford it. And then we have the only group that actually really won't switch to Vista, the linux naysayers. These 0.5% will argue that they don't need Vista nor do they want it because, hey, Simcity 1 WORKS WITH WINE under IceWM in Libranet!!!!!! GOTCHA!

I own 3 copies of Vista. Used it, and with the current state of drivers, I won't switch. When the manufacturers get their collective asses in gear and release decent drivers for my hardware, then I will consider switching.

C'mon man, you know i wasn't talking about guys like you. Nobody says Vista is perfect, it's just hilarious to see the same things coming up every single time a new version of Windows is released. In the end, they all run it and forgot how much they said in the beginning that they would NEVER use it.

that article hurt my everything sensorz.

and i'll run vista as soon as some games i want to play finally launch for dx10. the bills (for now) are more important than bein the first with an os which i don't require.

I agree with this guy. I've tried to use vista several times but the drivers are HORRIBLE. Game performance is less than xp and audio drivers are a joke. Once the drivers are cleaned up i will be glad to go to vista, its a nice o/c is u dont game.

The Inquirer said:
Sadly, I will admit that I did upgrade. I went from XP to Ubuntu and bought a Wii. Life could not be better now, gaming is fun again, and spyware is a distant memory.

Yeah I completely agree with this. I mean with all of the hundreds of high quality games available for Linux, and the fact that all the newest games are released for Linux and Windows at the same time, I can't see why anyone is still using Windows...

Oh, wait......nevermind. :D

Don't get me wrong, Linux is a solid OS, and I was impressed with Ubuntu. However if you're a gamer, switching to it just isn't viable, and all of the emulation software in the world won't change that. If the developers were smart, they'd take advantage of this Vista stumble and start taking other operating systems (not even necessarily Linux) a little more seriously. Unfortunately they won't, so I'll most likely be upgrading to Vista when I build a new computer that has a DX10 card, and a few real DX10 games are released (not these crappy ports and patch jobs).

I also find the people who denounce Vista as complete garbage, and swear they'll never use it funny as well. Let us not forget that the revered XP was once a huge resource hog and had plenty of its own problems when it first launched. Once Microsoft has had time to release a couple service packs, fix most of the glaring bugs in Vista, and some better drivers are released, it'll be no different than XP.
