DVI to HDMI problems

Any idea why using a DVI to HDMI cable from my PC to my Samsung HLS-6187W, if I switch inputs and go back to the HDMI I get no video until I disconnect and reconnect the cable to the tv?

If I turn the TV off and turn it back on the PC will not send out a video signal until the PC is rebooted. Driving me insane.

Also, 1920x1080@60hz worked fine until I upgraded to Vista, any ideas why?

I have a 9800 Pro and it does the same thing when I switch to other sources. My way around it was to create a keyboard shortcut. I downloaded Autohotkey, which lets you map any keyboard/mouse combinations to a command/batch file (very powerful stuff!), and also an utility called reschange.exe. I then programmed a combination of the Windows key and Spacebar to execute first a reschange to 800x600, wait half a second, then reschange back to 1360x768. It's definitely a long way to fix a problem that shouldn't exist, but hey, it works.

Do you have any other alternative inputs on you tv that you can use?

How about just buying an HDMI video card?

I don't think that will help Ockie....well it might but it is a gamble.

I've been plagued by this problem with my Z2 as well. It was an absolute hoot having to unplug and plug my DVI cable in and out of my HD cable box every time I switched to and from the cable box. The only times i've seen this just be totally horrible is with HDCP in the mix on top of it. I still can't get my Z2 to talk to 690G/X1250 motherboard I have even though it physically sees the projector. :(

Modern receivers are getting better about switching sources with HDCP in the loop...but it still isn't perfect.

Happens to me with my westinghouse and my X850 Pro, ill switch to watch some tv and then go back and it wont find it... sometimes CTRL-ALT-DLT works

i also noticed i couldnt install CCC through the DVI to HDMI either... i had to use VGA

HDMI i think has a much clearer picture then my VGA so i dont like using it

I think it will. Many peoples HDMI to DVI has been giving a lot of problems, from this problem to other problems such as not being able to achieve native resolution.

The problems were fixed by using the VGA input instead or DVI if the monitor has that option. I've had no problem switching HDMI back and forth, I just had the resolution problem which is now no big deal.

But this same problem has been also rampent for DVI to DVI with the constant changes to the HDCP protocol and EDID protocol. I believe the reason why people are seeing some success right now with HDMI to HDMI isn't because it is HDMI, it is because both the source and destination are using a more recent protocol which happens to negotiate correctly.

Also note that he said it worked with XP which really lends credibility that the problem is HDCP and/or driver based and not graphics based (remember that DVI and HDMI both use the exact same protocol for moving data).

EDIT: However, I cannot disagree that getting a video card with HDMI natively might just make it go away. The question is...is it worth the cost to the OP? It still pisses me off that after 4 years they still can't make PC's and TV/Projectors negotiate correctly over digital but they can with monitors.

Hmm didn't see that XP comment. Perhaps it's a drive issue, could be perhaps a video driver issue with that operating system.

Don't really want to get an HDMI card in HOPES that it solves the problem, since I just got the X1950pro in there.

It's extremely annoying, I do have a VGA port but at the moment my 360 is using it (until I can get an elite), but yeah part of the reason I wanted to do this was the perfect digital 1:1 pixel mapping I could get with DVI.

Ugg, some new ATI drivers just came out I'll install those and see if it helps at all, the last ATI drivers I installed made my system bluescreen until I turned off one of the ATI services. I use the HTPC for coolness factor alot, hence the reason for Vista, but damn I've had so many headaches with Vista, guess I'll learn more about it by having to fix it all the time.

I really wish I could get 1920x1080p to work again too, broken ever since I upgraded to Vista.

Maybe not the problem, but I read on another site that the CLK pin on the DVI connector needs a 5K pullup resistor. Maybe had to do with EDID.

HDMI was invented and ratified for one reason and one reason alone. To enhance copy protection, period. There really isn’t much in the way of video that good old DVI cables can’t handle as things are today.

The original thought behind HDMI was and still is they can stream data so fast that nothing you own can capture it. As such you can’t copy it either.

One other thing to keep in mind, DVD in any format is a stopgap measure at best.

How is that you say? Glad you asked. New buzz word for you “Ultra HD” Ultra all but duplicates hi end Camera HD quality in an all but lossless format. Distribution is the big problem right now as it can only be stored on huge hard drives not to mention an over the air transmission would far exceed the 10meg bandwidth limit TV stations are required to stay within.

I got to see a demo of this the other week and frankly it blew me away. I might also add, Mark Cuban is also very invested in this behind the scenes end run so I don’t see money as an issue. Oh, and before I forget? Ultra won’t play on the best of your TV or computer monitors. The upside is, it looks fantastic.

Of course the end user is willing to accept some compression; if it isn’t too expensive and that brings us to BR. BR with much more potential storage capacity would be the obvious choice for public distribution. Toshiba’s format is way too limited to carry any useful content.

It just gets better and better……….

just hooked up my 8800gtx to my denon receiver...dvi to hdmi, hdmi out to pioneer plama...works great...all resolutions are available to me.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but does anyone know of a proper way to fix this issue?

I'm having the same problem with my old 9800 Pro and Samsung HL-T6187S. Seeing how I just got an Onkyo TX-SR805, I do plan on building a new HTPC once I find an HDMI integrated motherboard that can handle bitstreaming of all the newer audio formats. Just looking to make my remaining time with the 9800 Pro less painful.

Almost seems exclusively an ATi driver issue. All the people with this problem in this thread are running ATi cards. Been testing out my new HTPC system with DVI>>HDMI cable with my 8500GS and video signal is perfect.

ATI drivers are awesome. I ran into the same problems quite a few times. Nvidia drivers are about 1000% better in terms of less bullshit happening.

Thats cause this is a known issue with ATI drivers; it's been around for a while now and, honestly, I'm suprised that it hasn't been fixed. The only work around I know for it is: 1.) use some sort of hotkey system like Vette5885 outlined or 2.) buy a NV card which is going to give you a better experience anyways.

ATI has released new display driver firmware for vista on 16 april 2008. This has solved at least my "hdmi switch-over" problem to my pioneer pdp-lx508d plasma screen.
I also installed the new Catalyst Control Center software version 8.4.

I'm using a Radeon X700 ATI graphical display card.

Regards Gerrie

Glad to hear it.
