DVI Question

My vid card has two DVI ports on it and I used a DVI-VGA converter to plug it into the back of my CRT.

For LCDs that have DVI ports on them, could I use a VGA cable with a converter on each side or do i have to have a DVI cable in order for it to work??

Also would there be much of a difference between DVI and VGA?

You could but why would you want to? It is a lot easier just to use a DVI cable.

A DVI link will give you better quality as it is digital all the way. Using a VGA connection to a LCD screen the digital signal from tthe graphics card is converted to analogue for the VGA connection and back to digital in the monitor. These conversions can lower quality.

The DVI->VGA adaptors only pass through an analog signal.

This won't get you ANY picture on most monitors assuming you can even plug it in (These adaptors fit in DVI-I or DVI-A ports, most monitors use DVI-D ports) and in no way will you get a digital signal.

Since the VGA signal has to be converted back to a digital one for the monitor to display it, there is almost always a loss in quality, how much of a difference will depend on the individual monitors conversion circuitry.

If your LCD doesn't come with a DVI cable for whatever reason, you can always purchase one online for around $5.
