DVI>HDMI+Audio?

Ok, I have an HDTV and LCD with built-in speakers; both connected to my Radeon 4800 which only had DVI ports.

For my HDTV I use a DVI>HDMI adapter and that transmits sound also.

For my monitor I use a DVI>HDMI cable, and it does not seem to be transmitting sound.

Is that normal? I don't really know how these things work, frankly I'm surprised that the video card has any ability to transmit sound at all.

Incoming potentially silly questions/suggestions b/c I'm not aware of your current knowledge level and this is your first post ever. Please don't be offended if you already know this:

A. Most monitors don't have built in speakers so to hear audio from a dvi>hdmi cord going into your monitor, you monitor needs to have speakers on the side or built in or have an audio-output like l/r audio that is in turn going to a receiver or stereo system. TVs do have speakers built in hence one reaosn why you might hear sound from yout tv but not form your monitor. Once again, if you already know this, please don't feel insulted. It is a possibility and some people honestly don't know this.

B. Some video cards require dual-link dvi cables in order to transmit audio. Try unhooking both dvi ports, check and see that the connectors look identical and there's not a little bit more hardware on the one going to your tv than your monitor (assuming you've double checked possibly a that the monitor -does-have speakers.

C. Try switching the cord going from video card to monitor with the one going from your video card to tv. If you can now hear sound on your monitor, assuming you double checked a/b, there may be an issue or something wrong with the dvi cable your using.

Yes, the monitor certainly has speakers .

The DVI ends are different, that must be the issue.

In that image, the DL-DVI-D in bottom left is the connection on the little adapter that my HDMI cable hooks into. That does carry sound.

The cable going to my monitor is the one right above it, DVI-D.

The DVI-D type cable does not have the ability to carry sound I guess?
