DVI-D vs VGA...

I'm sure this has been asked a few times but I'll take a shot at it anyway:

My LCD is plugged to my video card via a VGA cable, through a DVI to VGA adapter.
Now the image quality is fine, but I imagine there could be some improvement by switching to DVI cables.

So I go to futureshop, and the DVI-D cable is $50.00 !!! W00T!!!

Now I'm thinking...is it really worth it....

Then I go to my local computer store (PC Cyber) and the cable is $15.00 !!

Now I am confused, I don't know what to think anymore.

Question #1:
Is it worth it to switch from VGA cable to DVI-D cable? I mean will I see a difference?

Question#2:
What's the deal with a DVI cable being $50.00 and another one being $15.00 ??
Am I missing something?

Thank you for your time.

1) Not much difference. DVI always preferable.
2) No difference. There are even cheaper cables than that in the US, works just the same.

I personally can see a difference on my LCD by using DVI over VGA. To me the text is much sharper and the overall picture quality is much better. As far as the cost difference between the those stores, it all comes down to who makes the cable. For the most so called off brand cables will work just as good as a cable that costs 10x as much. I for one get all my video cables from www.monoprice.com . The prices cant be beat and they are really good quality. I wouldnt spend anything more than that $15 at your local store.

I researched this long ago, and iirc, the main difference was that the dvi can handle higher bandwidth than the vga?

Or is my memory shot?

The fact that one cable is $50.00 must be due to something...
Are you saying that there is no difference between the $50 cable and teh $15 cable??

DVI transmits an exact digital signal that defines each pixel individually.

VGA transmits an analog signal that gets pretty close, but not quite exact.

On many LCDs it's easy to tell the difference. DVI is often significantly better. DVI is also not susceptible to interference.

And, yeah, there's absolutely no difference between the $50 and $15 cables. Would you pay $50 for a SATA cable? Exact same thing here. Monoprice.com has 6-ft DVI cables for under $6. Still the same thing.

I am still confused as to why people would buy a $50 cable if there is no difference...oh well...
Thanks for the info!

You almost did, didn't you? ;)

Places like Future Shop even sell $60 6' USB cables, for crying out loud.

I just got a dual DVI-d for $7.20 off ebay including shipping and it works fine...but with my monitor I dont see any difference, it still looks great.

the higher end cables typically come with better end connects and probably are dual link. The ones you buy at monoprice for $6 though are dual link, so that isn't always an advantage either. It really comes to the end connections, and I would personally pay $1 or maybe $2 more for better end connections than a standard generic DVI cable, other than that, rip off.
