what is dvi-d, is it the same as dvi? and how many different dvi specs are there?

Theres 3 types of DVI ... DVI-D DVI-I and DVI-somethingelse

DVI-D is digital only so you cant connect an analogue CRT to it. DVD-I is DVI-Integrated or something and you can use both digital and analogue with it, the other is analogue only so I believe. All support different resolutions and different refresh rates. maybe somebody will be able to explain it better?

Yup, all those and then some, don't forget HDMI, yet another subset of DVI. This link might provide some help..heh, or add to your confusion:

Get used to ever changing "standards"

DVI-A is D-SUB with an other look (and perhaps other things that don't count here)
DVI-D is pure digital goodness
DVI-I is basically DVI-A and DVI-D combined.

My NEC 2180UX has two pairs of connections: DVI-D + D-Sub and DVI-I
That way you can connect two computers no matter what technique they use, because DVI-I handles both analogue and digital, DVI+D + D-Sub is obviously doing the same. There are cables with DVI-I (or DVI-A) on the one side and D-Sub on the other.

Hope that helps...
