Before I go a shell out some bucks on a DVI cable,
I was wondering if it's worth it?

yes - I definitely notice a difference. ESPECIALLY after using the DVI connection for a long while then switching to VGA and trying it briefly
 
There's a pronounced difference on a good LCD between the DVI and regular VGA cables.
 
i would not recommend going someplace like worst....errr...best buy, or circuit shitty....errrr...city, to get a DVI cable. they are just way too damn expensive for the little bit of extra performance they afford.

i got mine from Here, and they work just as well as any cable you'll get at BB or CC, for a fraction of the cost. btw, i voted "not much improvement, but worth it", which seems even truer in light of the above price difference.
 
I tried a couple of high'ish end 19" Sony LCD screens a few weeks ago with an ATI FireGL card with both VGA and DVI outputs.

The only difference I could detect (and I looked real hard) was a slight difference in screen luminance. I was dissapointed, as it is certainly no real step forward in screen quality.

Maybe next time eh? :(
 
I have 2 Dell 2001FPs sitting right next to each other, one on DVI, one Analog...you may not notice the difference right away, but if you put your face up to the screen and take a good look at text...you can see how perfectly clear DVI is...Analog can get close...but will never be as crisp as a pure digital signal...
 
i have a benq dsub and a sony dvid, i didn't think before but, my dvid lcd text has less redish, and image quality is less corrupted. no ghosts. response time works the same on both lcds (16ms).
 
My montior looks pretty much exactly the same on DVI and VGA, you can tell a slight difference but its not big enough to go out and spend money for,if the cable was free i'd say go for it.

if it is, just get a DVI adapter then...
 
DVI has a much better image quality than VGA. It is more noticeable when browseing the internet.

shelling out $12 for a DVI cable was totally worth it for me. My 730B ghosted in games when connected through analog, while with the DVI interface, it doesn't ghost one bit. Plus everything else is so much more crisper
 
Ohhhh yes. much nicer with DVI... espeially @ higher resoltions... 1600x1200... text is OH-so clear. :)

Exactly, if were talking about an analog CRT than no. It wouldn't be. Yes there are ways of doing it without an adaptor. For example I have a 22" CRT that has BNC connectors, and I'm using a BNC to DVI cable. Its nice, but not an improvement over analog SVGA cables.

LCD, the difference is huge. The clarity of DVI vs. analog is amazing. I don't know how to put it into words really. Its just a massive difference.
 
I don't think you can even get DVI ports on an analog display... can you? I guess it would add compat for digital only output... hmmm....
 
Hmmm maybe the ATI FireGL card I used has really good outputs on both DVI and VGA. As I'm a real AV/DVD fan and the difference was minimal.

Though if you are getting vast improvments through DVI then thats great. :)
 
I don't feel like the difference is huge on about 3 different models that I've tried. It's really more of a crisp solid picture versus the VGA image quality. No analog conversion has got to be a good thing regardless. If you can get a cable relatively cheap (or free) then you certainly won't lose any image quality for your trouble.
 
I will never go back to VGA....

DVI is the best thing to happen to displays.... Deffinatly notice on high resolution 1280 + LCD displays.... DVI makes colors more vibrant and everything sharper.
