Ok here is the story, I have a 6800 with the 81.84's. When I plug my monitor in with the VGA cable everything is fine and dandy. When I try and use my DVI cable I see my bios..then where I should see the Windows loading screen-nothing. Just a black screen.

Any ideas? :(
 
My old 17" AOC monitor has a similar issue, i have tried hooking it up to 2 different Nvidia cards (6800gt and 7800gtx) with the VGA to DVI adapter and had the exact same results as you describe. Booting screens showed fine but as soon as it got into windows nothing but a black screen. Funny thing is i have an even older 15" ACER and it works just fine hooked up that way, as does my primary monitor (Mits 2060u). So i'm thinking it must be some kind of incompatibility that certain monitors have when hooked up to a DVI input on Nvidia cards. But at least you can still use VGA if you want, my 17" is now completely useless due to this problem since my vidcard only has DVI inputs on it.
 
check the resolution your windows is running at. i am pretty sure that is the problem.
its way too high for your screen to display anything.
 
Thats what i thought at first too but i managed to try many different resolutions/refreshrates and no matter what i set it to the black screen would not go away. And like i said my 15" worked fine so if the res was too high you'd think it would affect that monitor the same way..
 
Do you have the vga port on your video card set to be primary display? If so you may have the second output disabled in windows. I would hope that the video card would be smart enough to realize that if the dvi port is connected and not the vga that the dvi should be the primary display but sometimes things are just weird.

Have you tried booting into safe mode with the monitor on dvi?
 
OP, what monitor do you have?

I have a very similar problem with my 2005FPW running off a AGP 6600GT. VGA works, but with DVI the monitor won't respond at all, not even during boot. I have tried the monitor on a friend's rig with an ATI X800XL, and it didn't work on that either (although his Sony LCD works fine on DVI from that computer)
