I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place or not...

My HP pavillion dv8000 for some reason will not play DVD movies without skipping. I have tried cleaning out my C drive, tried new DVD players (WinDVD, etc) and just about anything else I can think of. CD's play fine, no skipping at all, and I can burn them fine as well. When I first got the computer it played movies with no problem, then one day it just quit working properly. Any suggestions?

I have Windows XP Pro, an AMD turion processor, and 21 gigs of free space on my hard drive.

try using windows media classic player to play the dvd and see if it still happens. Download it for free of the net.

make sure the drive is in dma mode. try reinstalling the chipset drivers (ide/sata controller).

I just made sure that I am in DMA mode, and I tried reinstalling the chipset drivers and I'm still having trouble. I am going to try media player classic next.

My new rig didn't play DVD's on the first try either. I looked into it and seen that Vista doesn't come with a DVD encoder so I downloaded VLC Media Player and all is well:D

Thinking on my keyboard... I doubt a firmware update would fix it, so it must be software related... try a new codec? Try FFDShow

Try to uninstall and reinstall your dvd player. Install ffdshow and use VLC Player to run DVDs.

Both media player classic and VLC are working a little better but there is still noticeable skipping. Downloaded FFDShow as well. I was using WinDVD to play movies but it skips even worse than MPC and VLC.
