A more accurate title might be "burning issue", because I've ruled out the actual DVD-RW drive, but here goes:
Thermaltake Soprano ATX
Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13ghz
BFG Tech Geforce 7950GT OC Edition 512mb
Western Digital Caviar SE 250GB 7200RPM SATA
BIOSTAR TForce965PT Intel P965 ATX
Cooler Master eXtreme Power 400W ATX
G. Skill 2 x 1gb DDR2 800
Samsung SH-S182 PATA dvdrw
Asus DRW-22B35 PATA dvdrw
Win7 64
This is my old-parts build for the wife. I got a new BD-R for me last year and swapped my trusty old Samsung DVD-RW (worked great in my computer) drive into hers. Off the bat, it read all media fine, but I couldn't get the damn thing to burn a disc (CD or DVD).
As soon as I begin burning, nero hangs. A few minutes later, it only says:
Could not perform write
Reset occurred
10 minutes after that it finally spits the disc out. There's a small ring of visible burnage, and after that Windows treats it like a blank disc again, but programs won't burn to it, saying it's not empty (nero will attempt a multi-session burn, then fail again).
I snagged the latest Samsung drivers, I tried different burning programs (Windows, iTunes, nero express), I tried hooking it up on both slave and master PATA cable ends. Only 1 PATA input on my mobo, so couldn't try switching that around. After none of this worked, I figured the drive was borked and bought a new one, the Asus listed above. Same thing: yes read, no burn. I'm preparing to sell this computer, so I'm about to do a reformat and OS reinstall, and am hopeful that may clear things up.
Anybody have an idea what's going on?
