I've looked up DVD+/-RAM and I've always seen it used as either for storage or for video only, but I never see specs on DVD burners for how fast they burn to these types of dvds.... I know the DVD RAM format is rewritable, so should I look at the rw speeds on a burner I might buy or am I supposed to look specifically for a burner that says it writes to DVD RAM media?
thanks,

dvd ram is a completely different format that ONLY works in dvd ram devices. dvdrom drives cannot read it at all nor can settop players. dvd+/-rw are the rewritable formats that are more or less compatible with dvd systems.

I've never seen DVD-RAM used for video, it's just not made for that. It's a storage format based on the phase-change tech used in the 10+ year old PD/CD drives Panasonic used to make. People may be using it to store video files, but it's not compatible with 95% of the DVD players and DVD-ROM drives in use.

Anyway, unless you have a bunch of DVD-RAM disks, there's no reason to look for compatibility. It's a basically dead format.

I work at a TV station that uses DVD-RAM to store its video content. FOX and CBS affiliate.

Its a common thing. I think the biggest thing is the decks are nice and support every format, and the disks come in caddies....and reusable 1000 times, supposedly.

But are they using them for DVD-video,video file storage, or some proprietary method? There's a big difference in my mind between those.

Iomega makes a DVD drive that will burn all types of DVDs, including DVD-RAM. But, it's still basically a dead format. Today, I'd stick to regular +/- DVD burners.

They can pick and choose. DVD-Video, or proprietary. Sometimes they want to save a show and stick in a DVD-R to save it. Macrovision BS doesnt work at a TV station! :)

The biggest advantage of DVD-RAM for us is the caddies. When your shuffling hundreds of disks and one scratch could mean your fucked because that half hour program won't play. Its mission critical and it hasn't failed us yet. Better reliability than tapes even, and quality too.

Also the recorders are extremely versatile. What other format can you drop 4 hours onto, and be able to be at any part of it in seconds? recorders also do -r and -rw, which we use occassionally.

The only problem is they don't pass on the nielsons data. networks are working on that for us though.
