DVD +/-R Question

I finally moved up in the world and got myself a DVD burner. I bought a pack of +R discs and proceeded to back up one of my movies to a blank +R disc. It works fine in both my machine, as well as my friends laptop, but when put in a stand alone DVD player on the T.V. it won't play. It starts to, then starts skipping like mad, and eventually just quits. I tried another DVD player (a nicer one than the first) and it wouldn't even recognize the disc. What's the deal. Do home DVD players have trouble with certain discs, certain types of media, or something else? I haven't tried -R discs yet, btw.

Yes. Home or settop DVD players are really sensitive about media. Its not + or - DVD's that is the issue, its the media quality. For a rule of thumb, Made in Japan should be your first criteria for selecting DVD media. Digging a little deeper, you will want to learn about manufacturer codes on the dvd media. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ for a utility there. Once you find out what you have, then do a search on what others have found out about that media.

I'll save you some time. Purchase Taiyo Yuden media for your DVD burner if you want it to play well in your settop boxes. :)

Also depends on how old your dvd player is. Anything older than say 4 or 5 years probably won't work with DVD+R. Anything you buy now will probably support everything.
 
Also try DVDInfo (/Pro) - you can do a number of tests on your discs (depending on the burner) in addition to getting the MID code...And VSO Inspector v1.1 - you can do file/sector scans on the disc (similar to the Ahead/Nero freeware tool "CD/DVD Speed")..the nice thing about the VSO one is there is a "compare" button where it will query their database for matches between your media/MID code and MID code/burner combos vs the successful burns with both..

Still, you didn't yet specify your burner model or MID code..I'm thinking it's either a case of crappy media (coughCMC-cough) or media that is incompatible with your burner/plain crappy for your burner..A firmware update *might* help you.. RPC1.org
