DVD dual layer burners?

Hey peepz I heard that dual layer burners are coming out later this year...My question is when, and what is a good estimate to the price for one and for the dual layer media?

Wait...Don't go to the dual-layer yet...

IMO, wait until the BluRay Technology is released...and if you want to wait EVEN LONGER....dual layer BluRay...

BluRay technology is supposed to fit a whole lot more information on a single disc then with a regular red laser...
 
blu-ray lost the hdtv disk market, the movie groups are going with HD-DVD.
 
Blu-Ray, which is out in Japan and has been for awhile, is very very expensive.

Dual layer here I come!

Whoa...When did that happen? I don't remember hearing about that...All I've heard is that Windows Media Video has been approved as the HD on DVD format...
 
from what i've read they are supporting 3 codecs for HD-DVD; MPEG2, H.264 (aka MPEG4 AVC) and WMV.

Um, problem I have with blu-ray, is that they have been being hyped for what, 10 years now, and still expensive, and are incomptible with any dvd players out now.

Totally different technology.

So if you want to do more than make that hd backups, such as author dvd's, your still SOL.
 
Personally, I am going to wait til the NEXT dvd technology AFTER dual-layer drives, since I personally CANNOT stand the pause that acures with the layer switch in movies now. I HATE IT.

So, right now, I am super happy when I backup my dvds to one disc with just the movie on it, yeah you may loose SOME quality(depending on the movie), but I don't see it.

BUT, I would like the option of storing more than 4gigs on a single disc for my data back-up and archival tasks. So I don't know what I am going to do.
 
Ugh..from what I understand Dual layer burners are nothing special, when the media comes out later this year they're going to be issuing firmware updates to support the current drives on the market so that they (the DVD burners) can burn dual layer discs too.

I would link to the story but I link from Neowin to it, but yes firmware updates- Pioneer is the only one I remember because I want to get a new drive and I was looking at theirs. Seriously though how many people do you think would be pissed off if they have to buy new hardware after a year? They're not going to force people to do that, hell Intel's numbers go about 5 years before BTX because mainstream.
Thats just stupid business. Honestly I don't know what the differences needed between going from single layer to dual layer burners are but I would think that they had been "forecasting" such a move and had been making drives that can take it. Hell look at the number of drives that where made DVD-RW (or +) and where updated to DVD-/+RW.
 
I agree with xonik's cynicism. Dude,think about it.. burning a dual-layer disc is SO different from burning a normal DVD.. more laser power is required, which means that your laser diode will need ~45-50mW of power,whereas normal (8X) single-layer burning TODAY requires ~30mW.Which manufacturer do you think has been farsighted enough to install such a powerful laser diode?
Pioneer? Their A06 was a demo unit, they have since confirmed that they aren't going to provide dual-layer on any exisiting drives.
So I suggest you save up...
 
Im loving my Plextor 708A. Backs up almost everything to one disc, so Im very happy for awhile.
 
Am I just stupid or something or wasnt the big thing about DVD's that it used a blue laser already? Whats the difference between blu-ray?!
 
Current DVD players use red lasers. HD-DVD, the next standard, will supposedly use a violet laser which can also read current DVDs. Blu-ray is the name of Sony's blue laser initiative. It's just a brand name for Sony's specification. Supposedly, Blu-Ray hardware cannot read today's DVDs without a separate laser.

Noone is interested in a new tech that isnt backwards compatible.. Not in this scenario anyways..
 
So how do they store more data since i though the whole idea was that blue lasers or light around that wavelenght could be focused into a smaller area than red lasers?
 
Yeah, that's the basic premise. Blue light has a wavelength in the mid-400s (nanometers), while red is in the mid-600s. The shorter wavelength makes blue lasers more sensitive to varying data levels, thus allowing for denser data blocks and more capacity in the same size optical disc.

they just focus the red laser into a finner point. CDs were not the limit for red lasers.
 
Think of it like this.....

Lets take a hallow 6 inch tube representing the wavelength of current red lasers. Lets take that tube to a rolled out sheet of cookie dough. Lets say you can cut out 10 cookies using this 6 inch pipe. Each cookie represents a bit, 0 or 1, on or off, the binary code of all computers.

Now lets take a 3 inch hallow tube representing the blue laser technology. Now, taking the tube to the exact same size cookie sheet, we can get TWICE as many cookies as with the bigger tube.

With twice as many cookies, we get twice as many bits and that equals twice the amount of data in the same amount of space.
