dvd drive wont read disc

I recently did a format and reload on my grandpas dell studio 17 laptop to remove several viruses. Its now having an issue with reading disc. Its a slot loading dvd drive. It will sometimes see the disc is in there, and other times it wont. But it will never install programs or play music from a cd. It just hangs and windows explorer stops responding when i click the drive to make it read the disc. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver and that did nothing. Any ideas?
 
Dirty laser or bad drive is my guess. You could try blowing it out.
 
try reloading the dvd driver? if no go then get an external usb one.
 
It read fine when installing windows, so i was pretty sure it couldn't be dirty. I ended up flashing the firmware on the drive and it now works.
