DVD Drive Keeps Disappearing

So I had a Asus 24x DVD-RW Serial-ATA Internal OEM Optical Drive DRW-24B1ST that kept disappearing/reappearing on me. I just bought another one, the same drive, and installed it and again it disappeared on me after burning ONE audio CD!

How do I fix this?

I've tried everything already when I was trying to fix this issue with the first drive.

EDIT:

After the DVD drive disappears and I go to shut down the computer, it won't shut down! The screen turns off but the PC never does, no matter how long I wait.

What OS?

I dont have the shutdown problem, I do have my rarely used blue ray drive disappear since installing win 8. Curious of anyone else has the problem or has a solution.
 
I did some more checking.

It is a win 8 compatibility issue.

LG's driver is not compatible with win 8. The MS driver is 9 years old. And the most current firmware for the drive is 4 years old. :(
