i bought a samsung SH-S182M drive and when i install the dvd drive the computer no longer recognizes that any drives are installed and wont get past the bios. when i unplug ide cable from the drive the computer boots up fine. the specs of the computer are pentium 4 2.0 ghz and motherboard is asus p4s533. i have three other drives installed in the computer right now and i have tried the samsung dvd burner in both ide channels and using different ide cables. does anyone have any idea as to what the problem could be?

hi,
Please dont be offended if i suggest something that is too simple, i don't know your skill level, im just average myself. Hopefully you will find this advice useful...

You didnt mention whether you have all devices set to "cable select" or a "master/slave" relationship.
Try setting the DVD to Master and place it on the end of the cable with no other device present on that same cable and see if the bios recognizes it.

Most CD/DVDs have 3 jumpers on the back near the ribbon cable labelled MA, SL, and CS.
MA=Master
SL=Slave
CS=Cable Select

ATA/IDE hard drives are similar, they have various jumper settings for Master, Slave, and Cable select.

Either make sure all your devices (HDDs and CD/DVDs) are set to Cable Select (CS) or make sure each cable has one designated master drive (MA) and one designated slave drive (SL).

Also if you have the newer standard 80-pin ribbon (you should!) make sure the blue end is the one plugged into the motherboard.

Note: i know it isnt politically correct to use the terms "master/slave" anymore. When new less offensive terms are recognized by the industry, i will gladly use them.

cheers

I agree with nearly everything said ^ :)
you should use CS (Cable Select) if you have a Cable designed for it.
They have a hole punched in one of the wires leading to the second drive connector.
This is the master slave select line.

my computer knowledge is not that great but the problem is that when i plug in the ide cable into the burner it causes my computer to not recognize any of the drives i have installed. it not only doesnt recognize the dvd burner it does not boot up. if i unplug the ide cable from the dvd burner the computer recognizes the other three drives i have installed and boots normally. i have tried installing the drive as master, slave, and cable select using both ide ports on the motherboard and i have tried using 4 different ide cables. so my question is whether or not the dvd burner is bad or what could be causing this problem?

If the DVD drive is plugged onto a cable by itself (ie no other drives on the cable), it should be picked up whether it is set to master or slave and shouldnt prevent other drives being detected.
If that fails, it sounds like the drive is dodgy.

Try another power connector on the drive as well.
